a cute, tiny fellow that resembles a sugar cube – on a quest to track down 36 Star Fragments that have been lost. You are told to return to your starting point once you have found them all and are then set free to explore. The controls are simple: the left control stick is used to move, while the ‘A’ button can be used to jump, or double jump with a second press. After walking off the ledge on which you begin you’ll immediately see your first Star Fragment – and so the journey begins! 36 Fragments of Midnight is a 2D platformer that tasks you with collecting 36 star fragments. You play as a luminous square (presumably named Midnight) that can jump and double jump as it traverses the randomly-generated world.

You’d assume that there would be a high level of difficulty considering this is literally all there is to it. However, I completed the entire thing on my first attempt in less than six minutes. After I beat it, I wondered when level 2 would start but little did I know; I was already done. Of course, you can play it again to see if you can beat it in less time but considering the world is randomly generated, the time it takes you to complete it almost entirely relies on the hand that you’re dealt and not on your abilities as a gamer. You’d think that the world would be less repetitive seeing as it’s randomly generated but that’s far from the case here. Sometimes, you’ll have to work through the exact same situation twice in a row. The game consists of one level that you have to traverse and find the aforementioned 36 fragments. The levels consist of various obstacles that you have to jump over or avoid, from spinning saws to lazer beam and spikes, most of which require pixel perfect presicion to avoid. The level is also procedurally generated, so each time you die, you won’t encounter the same level layout again, which makes finding the 36 fragments a little more difficult.

36 Fragments of Midnight can be a frustrating game, not in a bad way though, just frustrating because the obstacle avoidance requires you to rather precise and I have no skill whatsoever. There are a few trophies to collect, some of which are quite harsh. One trophy requires you to die with 35 fragments collected and another one requires you to die with 36 fragments collected. Once you’ve collected all other trophies, you simply have to collect all 36 fragments in under 6 minutes and get them back tot he level starting point to earn the platinum trophy. I know game length isn’t everything and compelling experiences can be delivered in short running times but, from downloading to deleting, 36 Fragments of Midnight was on my Vita for around half an hour and I’m confident I experienced everything the game has to offer. First let me explain what 36 Fragments of Midnight is. What we have here is a 2D platformer where you control a white cube and are tasked with collecting and returning the 36 fragments. I’ve no idea what this cube actually is and the story is non existent. Should you die before you’ve collected and returned all the pieces you’ll restart the game to have another go.

Your task is to find them, and take them back, but it won’t be easy.

That is the entire game loop and it can be completed in a matter of minutes. Visually the game is striking though and the black and white colour scheme is nice and the little cube you control also has some nice visual effects too, with a trail following where it jumps and light radiating from it in interesting way. These 36 fragments are scattered across the stage which itself is randomly generated from a set of stock obstacles. The screen scrolls as you reach the end, so the game isn’t made of distinct areas rather one medium sized location, but the thing about these obstacles is that they are all drawn from around five or six different set pieces.

You’ll jump over saw blades, avoid spike and time jumps between lasers. As all of these set pieces are in the same patterns this makes the game really repetitive. I was able to instantly recognise each new set piece by only the briefest of glimpses and I knew precisely how to tackle each one. On the plus side, there are some pretty nifty visual effects. The environment is composed of shadowy stage outlines with a hazy blue background and as you play, the fog slowly rolls in which creates a decently haunting atmosphere.
