However, all of the main 60 cats in each level need to be found in order to progress and there is no hint system available. Some cats are quite easy to find but others are tiny or obscured and much trickier to find. The game definitely provides a bit of a challenge and the last cat on each floor always feels particularly unattainable but the overall experience is both relaxing and highly satisfying. The player finds themselves accepting a job offer to look after a building full of cats and must start by finding them all. This is as far as the narrative goes but the game does not require more, its fun themes and gratifying gameplay are more than enough to make the experience fun.

The cute hand-drawn illustrations consist solely of detailed linework on a colourful background with cats being filled in with colour as they are discovered. The regular and hidden cats will be filled with different colours from each other and the colours used varies to match the theme of each floor. The eclectic and jovial music also matches each floor, for example on the ‘cats are mystical’ floor there is eerie woodwind and twinkling noises whereas the ‘cats rock’ floor’s music featured bass guitar and keyboard. Hidden cats are out in the room somewhere, but two-click cats are hidden inside of drawers, behind curtains, or outside windows, and players have to click something before they appear. When I first began playing A Building Full of Cats, there were no hints. But after several fans of the game complained about the lack of clues in levels, the developers added an update that allowed players one hint per floor. While this was a welcome change, it was not implemented very well. Players only get one hint per floor, which usually isn’t quite enough. Also, if players are not in the room where the hint pops up, they won’t be able to see it. The hint system doesn’t include moving the camera.

Some drawers open, but not all. Some cats are hidden in a light fixture on one level but the light won’t do anything on another. In other words, instead of adding something interesting to gameplay, it mostly just makes you click everywhere that might open up. Even if it was just things that had a little tail sticking out or some sort of indication to keep me from clicking all over the screen over and over. I wish there was a better hint system too; hopefully, that is coming soon. This would also help with the double-click hidden cats that don’t seem to make much sense. One thing I disliked about the game is that the numbers in the upper left-hand corner of the screen aren’t labelled.

This is a surprisingly great HOG where our job is to find cats on each floor. Later on the creators added a sublevel (this is just a recent update) and access to the roof is a bit tricky as it is not done via the elevator but we have to use the stairs. Overall, there are 7 levels to clear out. There are hidden cats and there are even more hidden cats. The latter means you have to interact with various items so that additional cats will appear. The creators added a counter in the upper-left corner so that we can monitor our progress – those hiding in secret places have their special (separate) counter. Consider this an extra minigame for full achievement completion. Each floor has its own theme, colour and music (and even introductory message). The game does not belong to the category of difficult HOG games but it is still fun and you’ll enjoy it from start to finish. Highly recommended even to those who are not yet familiar with the genre! I had no idea what the paw print meant and which number was which when it got really low. While I was able to figure it out, a quick overlay screen tutorial would have been much more helpful instead of a wall of text at the beginning that I most certainly didn’t read.
