The choice is yours, and while it’s not as advanced as the Groove or ISM systems that featured in later 2D fighters it’s still a welcome touch of variation. ‘THE KING OF FIGHTERS ’97’ is a fighting game released by SNK in 1997. Featuring popular characters from ‘FATAL FURY’ and ‘ART OF FIGHTING’, these fighters will battle to determine who is the strongest. Of course it’s still an occasionally punishing game and anyone picking this up as their first KoF will likely struggle at first, but perseverance is rewarded. KoF ’97 also features some of the best graphics and sound to come out of SNK’s audio visual departments in the ’90s, with memorable tunes and superb backgrounds and animation. KoF ’97 is an excellent fighter and a very welcome addition to Wii’s Virtual Console. Like all fighting games it divides players — for everyone who prefers King of Fighters there’s a Street Fighter II fan, just as Tekken and Virtua Fighter polarise opinion — but if you’re after a solid scrapper you can sink some serious time into, you can’t go far wrong with King of Fighters ’97.

The game offers a number of refinements and enhancements over the previous games, including the welcome addition of the Advanced and Extra modes, which offer two distinct play styles. The Switch version of the game, developed by HAMSTER, features a wide variety of enhancements from the original arcade version. For starters, you can choose between the Japanese or English versions of the game, which have a few cosmetic differences. There are also leaderboards, save states, and difficulty settings that can be changed for your enjoyment. The only thing that kind of bums me out is the lack of online play. Unfortunately it’s lacking here, which I hope isn’t a bad omen for future fighting games that make their way to the Switch. King of Fighters ‘97 is one of the better fighters you’ll find on the Switch right now. It’s large roster and vibrant graphics brought me into the game, and its simple, intuitive gameplay gives you a lot to work with. There will probably be better fighting experiences for the Switch in the future, but right now King of Fighters can take its throne as one of the top fighters on the console..
