Being a jigsaw puzzle game… There’s really not much to comment on. Having played the Steam version during last year’s summer sale, I do at least have that version to compare the Switch version with, but the only difference outside of the controls comes from the lack of achievements, which were only awarded for clearing puzzles anyhow. Having played the basic, 60-piece puzzles in all three control schemes, (Macbook touchpad, Pro Controller, and Switch touchscreen) I can easily say the Switch handheld mode is the best way to play the game, since you can easily touch and drag the tile you want in no time at all.

Which single-handedly cuts the time that it will take to clear puzzles by a significant amount. The pro controller/joycon setup is OK at best, the cursor being controlled with the stick and the buttons being used to drag pieces, but it’s very slow and cumbersome to the point it’s not worth the effort. You can also play the game on Portable or Tabletop mode so that you can press on a piece and drag it around the playing space to find where it fits in the overall puzzle. That’s all there is to do in this one and the gameplay mechanics, along with the soothing music, If you want to crank up the difficulty you can also take on the ten available puzzles in the 120 and 240 pieces variations which definitely change how you approach a puzzle. Sure, 120 and 240 pieces might not sound like much, but when you’re building an animated puzzles it will put a completely different spin on how you go about solving it.

You can manually separate the pieces if you want to, but if you’re in a bit of a hurry, or don’t like to manually separate each puzzle piece, you can press a button on the screen with your fingers or with the hand cursor to automatically sort the pieces into edge pieces and the rest of the pieces that go inside of the puzzle… which is a much needed option for when you’re taking on the final four puzzles in the game. When in a puzzle you have the option of separating pieces by ends and insides or the option of just keeping them mixed up. I prefer to keep the pieces separated so then I can complete the edges then work on the middle. There is the ability to play up to four players but there is no bonus for doing so. Everything is a bit slow when moving pieces and since pieces are animated it can be pretty tough to get the right pieces in the right places. Having up to 240 pieces is a nightmare… I tried it once it took me around an hour to complete. As the name suggests.

A game where you solve a series of jigsaw puzzles with gorgeous moving images from the country of Japan. That’s all it is. There’s no story or hidden complexity, it’s just a series of simple jigsaw puzzles that you can play either on your TV or in handheld mode. While I’ve never been a big fan of jigsaw puzzles, I can certainly see the value in having a version for the Switch. It allows players to put together puzzles with more than just boring old pictures and even lets four players get involved without crowding into a small table. Plus, it has ten different puzzles and you can take it wherever you go.

If I was a big fan of putting together jigsaw puzzles, I would probably see this as a good deal. But before you rush to the eShop and plop down your hard-earned money, there are a few things we need to talk about. I hate to say this, but Animated Jigsaw is a terrible game that makes putting together a simple puzzle a lot more frustrating than it needs to be. What we have here is the video game equivalent of that “You Had One Job” meme. Like I said before, you can play this game on both the TV and in handheld mode.
