Armello represents close to perfection in so many ways. Firstly, it’s got character and personality. Though the game is a digital board game, and therefore the environment is fairly static, the characters that the development team continue to create and then release as DLC are a wildly entertaining bunch. Armello takes a leaf out of the book of stories like The Animals of Farthing Wood, in that it’s all about anthropomorphic animals weaving the same complex structures and conflicts that human society does. Every character has a distinct story, strong background, and impeccable design, making it easy to have favourites and view others as anti-heroes or perennial villains.

Luckily, the champion pool increase is more than just a numbers game. The Usurpers DLC in particular has heroes which are brimming with devilish personality, along with playstyles that revolve around more than the just original victory avenues of skirmishing and keeping a death grip on the King’s coffers. The Bandit Clan DLC adds around 50 new quests specific to this charismatic new faction, along with a thematically-appropriate follower that gives risk-taking players a second chance when taking up arms against their competition. The unfortunate change to the Switch version is the performance. Unlike the DLC additions that are, on the balance of things, a net positive, Armello doesn’t run as nicely on Nintendo’s console as it does on other platforms. It’s not the sort of frame rate drop that makes the game unplayable by any means, but there’s a clear disruption in the smoothness and timeliness of actions and animations that play out on the screen when you’re in-game. This isn’t something that you can attribute to online connection troubles either; some graphical degradation was experienced in playing against the AI in the Prologue segments, which in itself contained condensed elements of the game’s mechanics.

Story

The story is pretty straight forward: the King was once a beloved and benevolent ruler, but he has been infected by a dark force known as the Rot. Each day, the Rot drives him closer to insanity, and to death. Games typically take 45 minutes to an hour, as players move about the gridded map one hexagon at a time, working towards one of four victory conditions. You can either kill the King, which requires an impressive amount of both health and attack, cleanse the King of his Rot by collecting spirit stones and infiltrating the castle, go the corrupted route by increasing your own Rot score through various means then taking the King on directly.Dicey Dungeons Switch NSP

Achieve a prestige victory by completing quests, slaying other players, and building up your reputation.  The King will die of his rot after a number of rounds, and if no other player has killed or cleansed him, the prestige leader will claim the crown. Some of these victory conditions are more difficult than others, and luck and chance play no small factor in Armello. Breaking into the castle requires that you defeat a Peril set up by the King; Perils require you to roll dice and match a predetermined set of symbols in order to succeed.

Gameplay

Whichever route to victory you set out on, the general gameplay remains the same. You choose your hero from one of the animal clans, and then, after selecting your three rivals, you find yourself on a procedurally generated board. Once it’s your turn, you will have the chance to move three tiles in any direction, with quests that you are handed lending an objective to head for. It is important to take the terrain into account. Dungeons to explore, stone circles that heal you and swamps will damage you. On that note, your hero isn’t invincible. Crossing paths with a rival, King’s Guard or corrupted Banes will thrust you into combat, while perils (traps placed on specific tiles) will also threaten to deplete your health. Lose all your health and you will respawn at your clan’s starting point, a temporary setback that will slow your efforts to trek around the map.
