However, while the voice acting is generally tongue-in-cheek, the soundtrack is at turns epic and pensive, with some notes of melancholy. Despite the futuristic setting and often absurd nature of the game’s characters, the look and feel of the game comes across as something of a Western, which is further aided by the presence of a lot of Western tropes, such as quiet outposts, dustbowl homestead farms, deserted ghost towns, and bandit hideouts cobbled together from scraps of re-purposed structures. For all its absurd tone, Borderlands does an absolutely superb job with world-building and illustrating that the backdrop of all of this silliness is a world of tragedy.

Gameplay

The gameplay of Borderlands involves carrying out quests across huge environments while collecting oodles of loot, levelling up, and optimising your loadout all while experimenting with different builds. This loop is highly entertaining and rewarding, especially when you become powerful enough to take down the next hulking boss. However, you don’t have to go it alone as you can join fellow mercenaries online via a simple interface that also allows you to host your own games. I prefer playing Borderlands online as I find the gameplay to be much more enjoyable as you haphazardly muck about and help others fight through difficult situations. Plus, doing things like driving around in a vehicle where one player mans a cannon is a literal and figurative blast. In addition to all of this, the Game of the Year Edition includes 4 extra campaigns in the form of The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned, Mad Moxxi’s Underdome Riot, The Secret Armory of General Knoxx, and Claptrap’s New Robot Revolution. Each one of these campaigns will take at least a few hours to work through and the main campaign is at least 20 hours long so you’re looking at a ton of content.

The original Borderlands is still fun

Its feels like the vanilla experience after playing its follow-ups. It’s samey looking compared to what comes later, but it’s still worth a visit, if not a re-visit. This version includes quality of life features from its follow-ups (a mini-map replaces the useless compass, for example) but it’s still very much a trial run for a series that would find its feet (and sales success) with its sequel. More guns, improved diversity of the locations, superior missions and generally better everything. Unfortunately, this “more, more, more” philosophy sees Gearbox double down on the often-excruciating Borderlands series “humour”, which effectively amounts to screaming, memes and screaming memes. That said, it’s easy enough to mentally tune this stuff out of your head and just focus on the mission.
