Each area of the manor and its lovely grounds has a couple of plants for you to grow, with an inventive and interesting way of going about it. In order to work out what each seed needs, you gather scraps of journals, posters, letters, and more that act as clues. Then, you enter them in your herbarium and complete each entry. The game is a puzzle-adventure title that frequently reminded me of Gone Home, with a minimal presentation and strong art style that guided the player on a low-stakes adventure through a big, weird house.

After receiving an empty herbarium, you now need to fill in entries for picky plants from all across the world and how to grow them. The very start of Botany Manor is a bit of an odd choice as it places Arabella in a smog-heavy greenhouse that had me checking my graphical settings. Once the smog clears up and the gentle music kicks in, the vibe is immaculate, and it remains throughout the short experience. For the most part, the new puzzles are given to the player in waves, and they are encouraged to fully explore the new environment available to them to gather clues before approaching the solutions one plant at a time. We collect clues – sometimes scientific charts, sometimes nursery rhymes about the kind of trees that grow in a specific forest, sometimes in cookbooks or on the backs of postcards – that lead us to the correct formula. There is much cross-referencing to be done, double checking posters on walls and notes sitting on tables – which means a great deal of traipsing back and forth across the manor in order to avoid mistakes. There is nothing lurking in the shadows; Arabella is strangely alone, even as the fires roar and the kitchen burbles away. The manor isn’t cluttered or overdecorated, as it easily could have been. There is a great balance and consideration to the space: it doesn’t want to confuse the player, but it doesn’t want to hand them easy solutions, either. The atmosphere is bright and hopeful. Botany Manor isn’t a long game, but it is immersive and relaxing. There are fantastic, upfront accessibility options for players who struggle with the motion sickness that can often come with first-person gameplay.

There are so many well-thought-out puzzles to help the flora flourish, from sticking them in a smokehouse, pressing apples into the soil, and snapping pictures of them with a Victorian flash powder camera. You start off on the grounds, in a hot house, and swiftly make your way through gardens to the sprawling manor itself, and beyond to an orchard and up into the attic with keys you find strewn around the place. It’s not just plants that you learn about here, you get a sense of who Arabella is and what her life is like. She’s now an older lady and has been working with plants for a while

There’s a substory here showing that certain education and career bodies won’t accept her because she’s a woman, though the very fact she now has her own Forgotten Flora book shows that she’s proven them all wrong. In terms of how the game looks and feels, it’s delightful. It’s got a nice and unintrusive soundtrack that lets you know when you do something right with a nice tinkle of strings, and the graphics are nice and bright.
