Swing on lamp posts, kick your foes into garbage bins and out of windows, and deal devastating dive-kicks from above. You’ll have to use your surroundings to your advantage against these challenging foes. Perhaps inspired by the 2020 release of Streets of Rage 4 – a fine return to the series – Eastasiasoft have now released their own 3D beat-em-up, harking back to titles of yester-decade. Breakneck City is the name, and throwing hands most definitely is the game!
About Game
Available now on Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch (with a PC release all of the way back in mid-2020), Breakneck City tells the all too familiar tale of a crime-fighting duo delivering some sweet knuckle sandwiches to the baddies that are littering the neon-lit streets. It’s not just the 2D plane that the action will be taking place in, as heroes Sidney Flintlock and Justine Jacobs have all three dimensions at their disposal, and levels are much more sprawling than may first meet the eye. And it is these environments that have the potential to steal the show: set across 6 unique environments, from the dance club to towering skyscrapers, each level will contain a number of weapons and environmental interactables that you can make use of to dish out even more damage. When you can be swinging off of lamp posts and putting together aerial attacks, there’s no limit to the combos that can be pulled off against the variety of enemies, and the tricky bosses. A nice implementation as the animations are quite funny to see, for example hooking an enemy on a fish hook for example. I missed a more substantial fighting system, it is nice to pick up a weapon now and then but it all comes down a lot to mashing the attack button. Even with bosses, there isn’t really a tactic besides dodging and button mashing. Questionable level design | Confusing door entrances weirdly placed health recovery items and invisible walls are three main reasons why I think this has a questionable level design.

Fight through 6 hand-crafted 3D stages! Select from 2 playable characters or team up to use both in local co-op. Pick up weapons to gain the upper hand! Use the environment for special attacks and quick takedowns. Enjoy old-school arcade aesthetics and classic low-poly design. Take one look at the trailer for Breakneck City and you can find Streets of Rage and Double Dragon vibes flowing through its blood, so this one is perfect for veterans of the series. Breakneck City can now be purchased on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One via the Xbox Store – the price of admission is £8.39. Alternatively, you can pick up a copy on PS5, PS4, Switch and PC from their respective stores. WRC 9 The Official Game Switch NSP

You play as one of the two characters to choose from, Sidney Flintlock or Justine Jacobs. These ladies have the desire to protect their city. In this specific case, they wish to protect their local video rental shop from being taken over by an evil corporation. That’s pretty much all there is to know really, there is some word boxes of text in-between stages and boss fights, but the story overall is really an afterthought. The game has a total of only six stages, which have a decent variety with change of scenery. Fighting in places like a nightclub, a cool mansion, or even the streets of your city; all of them designed with a really cool 80’s/90’s aesthetic. Really harkening in on the era when these brawlers were the most successful was a cool and nostalgic touch.
The biggest let down, by far, would be the overall playtime.
The entire game can be completed in a little over an hour depending on your skill level. Not only that, the two characters you play as are exactly the same. It really doesn’t matter who you play as, so thinking you could play the game twice with each character, well, you really don’t need to. You could however play the game with a friend via co-op, which is probably the best way to experience Breakneck City. Another big issue is the controls could be a lot smoother. Moving around and attacking enemies can be a little bit of a struggle. Maneuvering to face your enemies requires almost precision face to face, in order to properly attack them. A control like that should be something you don’t even think about, and it’s a real drag that it’s something that can be really sluggish and distracting. Wrestling Empire Switch NSP

You can play this with a friend! | Two players at the same time can play the levels. It makes a big problem even bigger, as this reduces the difficulty even more. It makes Breakneck City a nice introduction game into the genre though, so you can perfectly play it with a non-gamer or younger person. I’m always grateful when developers add a co-op mode so thumbs up for that Renegade Sector! Fighting gameplay | There’s two playable characters Sidney or Justine and both fight exactly the same way. No skill is required, you simply mash one of the two attack buttons to damage the street goons. As I explained in the memorable moment section you can use the environment to damage your enemies too, hot steam from pipes, kicking chairs or pushing enemies against walls.
