Story
Cabin Fever is a short western-styled VN that has a story that is rather appropriate to our current pandemic situation. It probably has a storyline that is significantly more pessimistic than our current world (I hope these words don’t come back to bite me), but you’ll definitely be able to see parallels there. The main character, who you get to name and pick the gender for (male, female voice options are available, as well as an option to disable the main character’s voice altogether), is one of those self-sufficient types who lives in the mountains and has a pretty spacious cabin filled with all kinds of off-the-grid amenities. His solitary lifestyle is interrupted by the arrival of 21 year old girl who’s a bit clumsy and gets caught in one of the main character’s animal traps. Hatsune Miku Logic Paint S Switch NSP

Over the course of the story, the relationship between the two develops, leading to one of eight possible endings depending on your choices. So first things first. This is a very short game. I 100% the game in 2.1 hours, and while I do read kinda fast, I also played through the game fully several times (albeit the last couple of times just spamming the advance story button as quickly as possible) because I had a hard time getting some of the endings (more on that later). The game also kinda lacks options that bigger budget VNs probably have. A skip button would be a nice addition for sure to pass over text that we’ve already read. The game does have an Auto Function, but as with most VNs with an auto function, it moves way too slowly for my liking.
Despite the shortcomings and the brevity of the game
You can of course just spam the space bar to advance through the text quickly too, but I feel like that’s not ideal. It would also help to have more than six save slots, as there are actually a lot of choices in the game (by my count, there’s just under 20 choices). Despite the shortcomings and the brevity of the game as a whole, I feel like it’s a good experience for the relatively cheap price point. The girl is a likeable character and her voice acting is reasonably good (I can’t really comment too much about the protag’s voice acting though since I had it off for the most part). The music is nice and the art is decent enough. The design of the girl is, admittedly, not necessarily fully to my tastes, but I think it’s reasonably good and I’m probably a bit too used to Japanese VN design. Harvest Moon: One World Switch NSP

The background images are definitely very detailed and well-drawn for sure though. The story, while brief, will definitely have its emotional points, and I definitely felt motivated to work hard to get all the endings despite my difficulty at figuring out which choices influenced the outcome. In fact, I kept getting the same 3 endings until finally I asked in the steam community forum for this game for some advice, which led me to get the remaining four endings (the other ending is just an early game over). Overall,, Cabin Fever is a very short visual novel experience, but it’s also a relatively cheap one as well. Don’t expect get more than 2 to 3 hours at max out of this game, even if you are trying to get all 8 endings and 100% it.
That being said, I feel that the brief experience is definitely worth having,
One that has both lighthearted and emotional moments set in a world that is darker, but somewhat similar to our own in various ways. I had played Crush Crush before which was what I knew Sad Panda through but I didn’t know what to expect for their first attempt at a visual novel game. What I got was a very sweet poignant story that given the international situation these last few years really hit closer to home than I was expecting. Clocking in at just over 3 hours for a full playthrough as well as all alternate endings and achievements, it may seem a little too quick at parts but to be honest I found the timing of everything just right for a story of this type. If you like natural romantic storytelling than you’ll like the budding relationship between the two main characters. I will admit that I did play the uncensored version but other than one nude scene near the beginning and a completely optional sex scene near the middle there really wasn’t anything that you would miss if you decide to play without it. Overall, I recommend this game not only for those who love visual novels but also for those who want to support a developer like Sad Panda who are starting to try new things in the gaming world with success.
