Back to the arcades
Arcade machines have been around since the very birth of the video game industry. They lay the first stone of their huge cathedral in that bar where Pong’s yellow and brown cabinet saw its slot for inserting coins jammed . This can work, thought Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dubney when they saw that small initial triumph. Since then, and until their long agony at the turn of the century, they were one of the greatest rivalries in the world of video games, the fastest and fiercest. The competition was fierce to bring to the salons or the most remote bar in the country the most spectacular machine, the most fun, the one that would steal the hearts (and what the pockets contained) of thousands of fans. Today that Pong piece of furniture shows its well-deserved retirement in museums , and the thousands of pixelated children it had around the world come back to life again and again in the form of well-deserved compilations. Not even the oldest of us forget those glorious times, nor do the youngest feel the slightest rejection of something so ancient. And this is a gift worth analyzing.
All games from the classic age of gaming industry
Progear. There’s a lot to like about Capcom Arcade Stadium, and I’ll get to those in a moment, but first we need to talk about Progear. Originally released for arcades in 2001, this game is an important part of the legacy of the danmaku masters at Cave. It was their first side-scrolling shoot-’em-up, for one thing, but also a decidedly unique and charming game with an inventive scoring system, gorgeous sort-of-but-not-quite steampunk aesthetic (think Howl’s Moving Castle), and even an element of romance. And yet, it’s a game that doesn’t seem to be well-known, or at least, it’s not one whose name comes up often. (I’m not an expert on the history of shmups by any means, but I’d never heard of it until Arcade Stadium came along, and I’m sure I’m not alone.) If not the whole cause, a lack of any sort of console ports is at least a contributing factor to Progear‘s obscurity: the only non-arcade releases have been for Japanese mid-2000s flip-phones and Capcom Home Arcade.
Twenty years of us
Indeed yes, it is appropriate to explore the history that once was, because it is a rich, elegant and exciting story and spending around 40 euros you put a large part of it at home. The thirty games included in the all-inclusive package start from Vulgus (1984), in the semi-prehistory of the video game world, and draw a trajectory that continually pierces hearts, until it runs out (sold out) in 2001 by Progear , an excellent shooter from Cave that flexes mammoth muscles in bitmaps, at the time exaggeratedly ignored by the whole world. Among these twenty-five years of more or less convinced and convincing successes, there is an almost obligatory attention to two genres most frequented by Capcom: fighting games, scrolling or dating, and old-style shooters., those made of airplanes and spaceships, almost always. Those made, very often, by biplanes or the like of the 194 X series , which takes Capcom’s events by the hand with 1942 (in 1984) and leaves them only in 2000 with 1944: The Loop Masters (co-developed by Eightint Razing who, elsewhere, he was battling Capcom itself with his little Bloody Roar ).Dwelling on Mercs or Striders , Captain Commando or Mega Twins , Bionic Commando or Forgotten Worlds , would be a bit of a bummer. It has been talked about a thousand times and if you really care, you already know what we are talking about and why it is (almost) always a very amiable pain to inflict a dip in that past, and in your past, of course. - Lastly double click on the game and enjoy it.
NOTE: Some games may not run in Yuzu emulator, therefore you may use Ryujinx.
