Together with them, she takes on trials that gradually teach her about her unknown surroundings and her own destiny. There’s Ash, the cold and aloof prince who of course melts and becomes kind over time. Luke, the perfect and sweet angel who can do no wrong but has a tragic backstory. And Val, the hothead demon who is a little goofy but very loveable. The characters don’t break out of their molds too much outside of these descriptions, but they banter well with each other and are a good support system for Aria. The problem is, just like the characters, the story doesn’t break out of its initial mold either.

Each character will feature their own side story, providing you with the chance to explore deeper into their backgrounds and personalities!

To put it bluntly, it’s boring and has no depth. There are so many threads that are woven into the narrative but just go largely unexplored. For example, each of the love interests has a personal goal that motivates them, but beyond the initial explanation, there is little else that gets added to either their character development or their story. The game is kind of just like “this is why they’re doing this” and then rides the coattails of that one statement to the end where it half-heartedly reveals the rest of the “mystery” but gives no in-depth explanation as to the whys and hows. It all feels very superficial and bland and, honestly, made this game very hard to get through. The only explanation I have for this is that there are more entries in the series coming, as this was sold as part one of more to come, so maybe that’s why they handled things this way. Still, it came off very half-assed. Agate doesn’t shy away from quickly making Aria the center of attention and drama. Immediately after her adopted brother/future teacher Damien takes her to a secret train station to board the magical train to the otherworldly academy.

She gets the opportunity to interfere in the assassination attempt on the human prince Ash’s mother. When she leaves the train and arrives, before she can even get to school, she ends up involved with an attack that also provides an opportunity to meet the romanceable Angelus Luke and Daemon Val as the two of them work alongside Ash to mitigate the damage.  After knowing Val for a total of five minutes and seeing one example of him handling an altercation and dangerous situation well, you’re fawning over him and calling him “awesome” repeatedly. Should be reveals Agate leads up to being tossed out. The localization also features a lot of awkwardly phrased sentences, which hurt the immersion. Phrases like “Besides, if you manage to become the best graduate of the academy, they will grant you one wish” and “As soon as the staff’s words were heard, my surroundings became noisy” are prime examples. The generic nature of the love interests, translation, copying of elements from other magical academy works, and fact that Aria can suddenly feel like one of the most important people in the world all kept me from really connecting with things.

By the end, I liked Val enough, but didn’t feel like I needed to go back to pursue the others like in other otome games. I love games where your choices matter, and that is very much the case with Celestia: Chain of Fate – to some extent. It seems I have a curse with Otome games, as on my first playthrough, I always reach a bad ending. When I say your choices somewhat matter, it’s because often, they don’t. When you have the chance to speak, there are three dialogue options. However, there were a few times when I made a choice, and it had no impact on what Aria did.

Of course, there are times it does make an impact (hence why I received a bad ending initially) but it’s something to be aware of you can even trigger one via certain choices. It surprised me a bit, given the general tone doesn’t feel that dark. That sort of thing feels like it’d be more at home in otome games like Piofioreor Virche Evermore. It’s fine, and just means taking a bit more time to save before decisions a development decision ruined her as a character for me and I will explain why in the next section, as it really has more to do with the gameplay than the character itself.
