Mess up a platforming puzzle, and Ekko can rewind himself to safety, zipping backwards along his timeline to a point just before he plunged clumsily to his death. It’s a tool that’s endlessly satisfying, even if 50% of its uses are for bailing you out of your own mistakes, a gentle Braid-like reversal that lets you walk back a few clumsy inputs while still making you feel like you’re in full control. Invaluable within Convergence’s intricate late-game platforming sections, it’s a system that truly shines in combat. Ekko is fragile – a few hits is all it takes before you’re down for the count – but the ability to rewind means that if you take a couple of clumsy hits.

Encounter League of Legends champions like you’ve never seen them before.

You can jump back and reassess your strategy; if diving into a fight means an enemy can get a hit off, you can stay away until the danger has passed; if a specific jump puts you in the path of a bullet, you can rewind an adjust the trajectory of your jump to get clear of its path. The one problem with the endless hordes of enemies is that they do get quite samey. Shield dudes, poison-people, and smoke bombers all seem to endlessly arrive, especially in the early section of the game, leading to some serious combat deja vu. As far as gimmicks go, the big deal in Convergence is your ability to mess with time. Fallen off a ledge? Rewind time. Smashed in the face by an enemy? Rewind time. You get the idea. It’s not the most original idea, but it does work well in Convergence, making the occasionally overwhelming battles feel less one-sided and offering you a way of escaping attacks you can’t counter. The Zero Drive counter feels fair, too, limiting your time travel ability to eight or fewer charges, so you need to keep an eye on how many you’re using during a boss fight.

Unlock new abilities and face rivals in a series of explosive battles to learn who’s with you, and who’s against you.

There is no doubt that the Gameplay is where CONVERGENCE shines brightest. It is just enough to keep players wanting more additions to Ekko’s abilities but not enough to be overwhelming. Truthfully, even for someone who admittedly does not play a lot of action platformers, this game felt like a perfect balance skill and fun. The fact that Ekko only has three or more or less health, depending on what the player decides at the start of the game, may scare players. But the rewinding of time adds such an enjoyable layer to health that players will likely be more worried about losing their rewinds than their health during certain fights. Speaking of fights, most of the boss fights while on the middle difficulty were not too tough. The first one felt like one of the more difficult fights due to needing to learn the mechanics of the game. After that, learning the combos were not terribly hard. There is no doubt that solving the small puzzles and warping, running and jumping through Zaun was enjoyable and easily the best part of the game. Still, if you’re a League of Legends fan, it does seem there’s plenty to engage with here, from fully-voiced characters to allusions to other heroes from Riot’s MOBA, full of easter eggs for the discerning series know-it-all.

Run, leap, and slide your way through the streets of Zaun. Meet champions, face down enemies, and locate never-before-seen sides of the Undercity.

Even when you’re not getting yourself out of trouble, Convergence’s combat is an excellent realization of Ekko’s League of Legends toolkit. A chunky melee weapon makes for some meaty combos, but you’ll rarely get the chance to simply whale on a foe without having to weave around incoming attacks, and it’s the other gadgets and abilities that flesh out this Metroidvania-style take on Zaun that lend tactical weights to fights. On the subject of boss fights, this is where Convergence could stand to learn a little more from other Metroidvania-type titles.

They just feel a little dull, especially early on in the game, with nothing to make you feel as if you’ve stepped into a boss fight outside of the health counter in the bottom right corner. Sure, as you expect, things dial up as you explore further into Zaun, but the scale of Convergence never feels quite as epic as something like Hollow Knight or Rogue Legacy. As someone with only a passing knowledge of the League of Legends series, I can confidently say you don’t need to know much at all to jump right into Convergence.
