The game’s levels are divided across ten “Dimensions”, each with their own theme. Aside from the main levels, every other Dimension includes a dedicated boss level. Completing any given level will unlock a “Time Trial”, in which the player must complete the level as quickly as possible. Time Trials are activated by collecting a stopwatch icon at the beginning of the level. While a Time Trial is active, all checkpoints are removed, thus requiring the player to start the level over if the player character dies. Clearing the “Trouble Brewing” level unlocks an “N.Verted” mode for each level, in which the level’s path is inverted, a different visual effect depending on the level’s Dimension is applied, and the Wumpa Fruit are rebranded as “Bumpa Berries”. Six of a level’s twelve Gems are only accessible in the N.Verted mode.

It’s About Time tells the story of Crash and Co. having to stop the returning Neo Cortex, N. Trophy and Uka Uka who, after finally escaping imprisonment, have created a Rift Generator that tears the very fabric of time and space. It’s a clever narrative setup that doesn’t take itself seriously, allowing for a ton of inventive and exciting locations to be hopped between throughout levels and worlds, and also for nods to different characters and games from the wider Crash lore, which is nice for fans of the series looking back over the past 25 years. Why yes, I am going for the record of Crash 4 reviews. This is my fourth piece on the game, including the demo preview and PS5 Upgrade impressions, so you know my opinion on it at this point. It’s really, really good. The Switch version makes a lot of compromises, but at its heart this is still the same, incredible game.

The biggest differences between the two other versions I’ve played (being PS4 Pro and PS5) are resolution and framerate. The overall visual quality has been greatly reduced to fit comfortably on Switch, so don’t expect things like depth of field or even anti-aliasing along with a max resolution of 720p. Instead of the 60 frames per second I’m personally used to, this version runs at 30 with some very rare dips, mostly in cutscenes. While the base PS4 version did run at 30, this combined with the lower resolution can actually hinder gameplay and make the overall experience more difficult. After the loading, my second fear around Crash 4 on Switch was just how busy the game gets, especially towards the end. The Switch is more than able to handle the hectic action on screen though – but admittedly the graphics take a hit across the board to accommodate this. It’s also worth noting that the most chaotic sections are incredibly difficult to pass with Joy-Con, especially with drift. The game runs fine in handheld mode, and I bounced between handheld and docked-with-a-Pro-controller throughout to test both styles out. Up until the final few levels, I didn’t really have a preference, but I’m not sure I’d have beaten the last few stages with Joy-Con alone.

The biggest downside is the graphics, and even there, it’s manageable. Crash is not a game with gorgeous vistas that extend onwards forever; most of the action is right in front of you in fluffy cartoon goodness. On Switch, it kind of looks like you’re playing the game through a thin cloud of smoke. The coloration is slightly dim, the details are a bit hazy, and everything has weird grey speckles covering them like shadows. Performance-wise though, that’s the worst I can say about it, and the smokiness doesn’t bother me anyway. Cadence of Hyrule Switch NSP
