The best course of action is to try to make a game that feels like a memory of an old game and not just the old game. This is something that Yacht Club Games absolutely nailed with their debut Shovel Knight.

That game succeeded largely because it felt like vintage NES-era classics, but was thoroughly modern overall. That’s why my hopes were high for Cyber Shadow, a game developed by Mechanical Head Studios that Yacht Club took under their wing in 2019. Whereas Shovel Knight was clawing at the memories of the likes of Mega Man and Zelda II, Cyber Shadow seems more interested with Shadow of the Ninja or that awesome NES Batman game. While it doesn’t ascend to the highs of Shovel Knight, Cyber Shadow is a well-paced, challenging platformer that manages to not lose the thread of what makes those old games memorable. It does that by nailing the overall feel and staying fresh at every turn. You control Shadow, a mysterious cybernetic ninja who awakens in the wreckage of Meka City. The narrative is almost shockingly ever-present, with gorgeous cut scenes that evoke the style of NES Ninja Gaiden cinema sequences. While there are some novel twists, the story is one of the weaker parts.

Nearly seven years ago, the world was first introduced to Shovel Knight, a passion project that aimed to emulate some of the most legendary game releases of the 8-bit era. Since then, Yacht Club Games has gone on to extensively expand on the base Shovel Knight game, and now the studio has begun to look to the future to its next big challenge. Produced by Mechanical Head Studios – which consists of sole developer Aarne Hunziker – Cyber Shadow is a thrilling and enjoyable callback to the best action the 8-bit era had to offer. Through its punishing difficulty, cyberpunk aesthetic and tight platforming, Cyber Shadow thoroughly establishes itself as one of the best old-school retro platformers out there.

Story of the game

The story sees you assuming the role of a ninja named Shadow, who stands as the last surviving member of an ancient order of ninjas. Shadow is awoken in a bizarre and darkly technological setting and is tasked with piecing together what happened to his kin and how he can stop the grand threat that saw the fall of his clan and the world it existed in. Though the story is fittingly sparse (this is an 8-bit action platformer, after all) it’s rather striking how well it manages to set an effectively heavy tone as transhumanistic themes are explored over the ten-ish hour campaign. It’s not a story that’ll win any major awards, but this is also a narrative that has a little more depth to it than you may expect from a relatively simplistic game. Luigi’s Mansion 3 Switch NSP

From a gameplay perspective, Cyber Shadow draws most strongly from the classic trilogy of Ninja Gaiden games, as you’re tasked with going from level-to-level in a linear fashion while cutting down anything that gets in your way. Shadow has a trusty katana that dispatches most enemies in only a couple hits, and he must make use of his well-honed agility to dodge and jump his way through extensive gauntlets of cruelly-arranged obstacles. Cyber Shadow is the sort of game that proves to be ridiculously simple on the surface – you merely have to run, jump, and slice your way through every level – but the intensity of the level design and the continuous introduction of new obstacles and enemy types keeps the experience from growing stale.

A visceral, memorable platformer

When we interviewed Cyber Shadow solo developer Aarne “MekaSkull” Hunziker a year ago, he expressed a clear goal for his 8-bit sidescrolling ninja platformer: “to see how far you can go with two-button gameplay.” Having finally played the game myself, I can see how this concept truly defines every step of the experience. It doesn’t necessarily always work out in the game’s favor, but there’s no denying that Cyber Shadow is an utterly high-quality experience that uses NES classics as fuel to create something new and exhilarating. As far as 8-bit platformers about cyborg ninjas go, Cyber Shadow makes an earnest effort to tell a narrative, using stylish pixelated cinematics, computer messages, and messages left behind from souls of fallen allies. The story is all still instantly forgettable anyway, but it gets the job done and offers up plenty of excuses for cool fights. And fight you shall. For narrative reasons, protagonist Shadow begins the game with a basic sword attack, the ability to jump, and that’s it. At the outset, he’s not wildly mobile, and while some might find that disappointing after the likes of The Messenger, I found it refreshing.
