Though don’t take that as it won’t be difficult because this game is really hard and you don’t even get continues which feels oddly strict. There’s multiple things you can upgrade like your shot, bombs and barrier. Though they do reset when you die so you’ll have to be really good to keep them and even make them better weapons if you upgrade it enough. Despite it’s harsh difficulty the design of the levels is pretty engaging throughout, same goes for the bosses as well though they are inconsistent in difficulty. There’s even some new things like toggling if you want a 26 boss mode or how the Arcade did it.

You can also play as this easy mode ship called Tiat if you want to see more of the game but aren’t good enough to get there, just keep in mind your score won’t be recorded. There’s even a cool boss rush mode if you just want to fight all of the bosses. The game looks pretty nice as it seems to be pretty much arcade perfect from what I’ve been told. I really love the design of all of the bosses. The OST however can be hit and miss as some tunes are really good but I’d say some miss the mark for me but thankfully there’s more good then bad. Darius Extra version is fun and one of my more favorite shmups on the console. It’s really nice to have something like this as a bonus for a mini console. I’m sure most people who own the game have probably already tried it but it’s worth a play if you haven’t. Maybe I’ll play Super Darius sometime. Well, it only took 30 years for this to happen: a port of the first Darius for the Mega Drive. The story behind it is nothing short of a fan-meets-developer’s fairy tale. It all started with a fan-made conversion that was eventually picked up by Taito and M2, came out in the game roster of the Mega Drive Mini and was later fine-tuned for a last, definitive version released in cartridge format by a few different publishers.

GAMEPLAY

Besides the absolute class of the porting job, this release allows players to experience the game in any of its three variants, which are directly based on the original arcade boards: Old Version, New Version and Extra Version. That’s the reason for the Darius Extra Version title, which by all means represents a step-up from previous ports Darius Plus and Super Darius, released for the PC Engine Hucard and CD formats a very long time ago. For those who never played many shmups before or have lived under a rock in the last decades, Darius is an all-out space battle of the stylish spaceships called Silver Hawks against an enemy race empowered with huge battleships that mimic aquatic/marine creatures. Pretty much all aspects that define the series are presented in this first chapter, from the now famous WARNING messages prior to boss fights to the branching path mechanic that makes you choose different routes as you progress through the game – just remember to keep the ship off the centerline when the boss goes down or you’ll crash against the rocky splits. At first glance, Darius Extra Version corresponds to the version that you already know from the Mega Drive Mini – but if you take a closer look, you will discover a few subtleties. In addition to two balancing variants of the machine, referred to here as “Old” and “New”, the eponymous extra mode is also attractive.

It gives you three continues on the way, which makes life a lot more pleasant.

Also new are small balance adjustments and improved sound. A free button assignment is also possible in addition to the continuous fire option, so you can put rockets and the normal shot on the same button. Another interesting option is the choice between the eleven fishy bosses of the arcade original and the 26 bosses of the PC engine port – if you want to tackle the bosses directly, you’ll be happy about the boss rush mode, which is also available in the variants ”Old”, ”New” and ”Extra” is available. The standard ship Proco corresponds to the original, while the blue Tiat has more powerful guns and does not downgrade your weapon if you lose life – but in return you are not allowed to immortalize yourself in the high score list. Due to the branched level structure, the replay value is enormous, thanks to the 32 Mbit module memory, no compromises are made in terms of scope and presentation.
