Fernz Gate Switch NSP Free Download Romslab You’ve really got to feel sorry for developer releasing a traditional RPG on Nintendo Switch in the wake of Octopath Traveler. Square Enix’s throwback summer release may have had a few niggling issues, but it took all the things we loved from the glory days of Final Fantasy and made them feel fresh and new once more. Fernz Gate might not make such a grand impact on the genre, but beneath those retro visuals lies an adventure bubbling with role-playing potential. You play Alex, a high school student with immaculate anime hair who awakes in a mysterious and predictably medieval-style new realm. ROMSLAB.COM Best Switch Games

Turns out he’s in Fernland, a ‘world between worlds’ full of travellers who have fallen out of their own reality and into this one. It’s a rather strange place, one where mana flows with wanton abandon and monsters lurk around every corner. Of course, there’s a big bad who’s causing all sorts of big bad things (who also happens to sport a costume that’s going to have Ganondorf’s lawyers throwing copyright claims around in no time) but isn’t there always? Kemco has gotten a certain reputation when it comes to their RPGs. That reputation is somewhere between “not good” and “oh jeez please not another Kemco RPG already”. Top Gun Air Combat Switch NSP

They churn out games with such frequency and such intensity that you may wonder how they keep up quality control for their games. The short answer is they don’t. The long answer is they doon’t. They’ve become notorious for using cheap assets and cliched stories and essentially repeatedly making the same game over and over again. Fernz Gate, one of the many Kemco RPGs available for the Vita, certainly feels almost identical to all their other games and if you took a screenshot from this one and mixed it up with screenshots from their other games your friends likely wouldn’t be able to tell them apart (and then would promptly kick you out of their party for organizing the world’s worst party game).
Players can explore the vast world of Fernland, discover hidden treasures, and interact with NPCs.
While the character sprites are certainly detailed, most fall directly into either modern (busty, chibi, fantasy elf) or classic (big hat wearing ranger) cliches. At the same time, the characters themselves feel somehow out of the place in the world that surrounds them. Not being a graphic design expert, I cannot directly place blame on any particular aspect of the visuals. But the world and the characters in it just don’t feel like they belong together. This problem is exacerbated by the controls. Players can only move their characters in eight directions across a flat plain, a design choice that feels like a half measure between the 4-directional movement of classic Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy, and the move free moving design of a modern RPG.

Even switching from the joystick to the D-pad did little to make the movement feel any less clunky. At the same time, KEMCO’s boilerplate, mobile-sourced menus do nothing to make the player feel at home or immersed in the story. Perhaps the best thing to be said about the game’s presentation is that the music is catchy and energetic. The game has a fast-paced, rock-inspired soundtrack, and I frequently found myself humming the battle theme between gameplay sessions. It isn’t even that Fernz Gate is bad and there are certainly some really interesting ideas here. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection
The game has a crafting system that allows players to create new items and equipment from materials found throughout the game world.
I just wish Kemco cared about their games, because this is something that feels like it was doomed for mediocrity simply because the developers cared more about quickly turning a profit than making anything interesting. The one thing that tends to distinguish Kemco games from each other is the story, and this certainly has what some people might consider to be a story and what others may classify as a “mistake”. You play as Alex, a character so forgettable I just had to look his name up and I’m still not positive I remember it right.

He’s so forgettable that even he doesn’t remember himself, and he wakes up with a pretty bad case of “I don’t know how I got here or what is going on” a.k.a. everyone’s first weekend at college. With its pixel sprites, simple top-down levels and 16-bit visuals, Fernz Gate isn’t bringing anything new to the presentation department – in fact, if you’ve played any recent Kemco games such as Antiquia Lost (a title with which this game shares a lot of assets and systems) you definitely know what to expect – but it does make a concerted effort to offer something a little different when it comes to the meat and potatoes of your general questing and monster-slaying antics.
