One of the most interesting things about it is the way it’s being distributed. You can download the game for free from the Nintendo eShop, which gives you access to a small portion of the campaign and multiplayer modes. The full version of each of those is available as DLC, or you can unlock them both together for the complete package. It’s a throwback to the old shareware demo approach taken by first-person shooters on the PC in the mid-1990s, and as a method of allowing players to try before they buy it’s commendable.

Trouble is, trying the game is unlikely to impress anyone but the most shallow graphics junkie. There’s no denying that Ironfall represents an impressive technical achievement for the 3DS. There numerous titles better served to take gamers’ money than this. However, if looking for a third-person shooter that looks stunning on the 3DS eShop, for some reason since the genre usually performs at its best on a big television screen, it might just be worth picking up the multiplayer package. Be sure to try the demo version available before purchase, though, since despite being one of only a few decent looking third-person shooters on the 3DS, care should definitely be taken before splashing the cash. A shame that the small team apparently had hardly any time left for the rest of the game. Aside from the pretty effects, the hotel lobbies, laboratories and desert sections seem as lifeless and indestructible as they did in the nineties. Not even chairs or plants move when touched – there are no bullet holes or splintering props either. Anyone who activates the 3D effect on an older console will also be in for a nasty surprise, because the scenery then jerks so much that the entire game speed drops. The title was obviously developed primarily for the new, technically more powerful 3DS models.

The dreariness of the design is directly transferred to the gameplay: While I encounter the exact same furnishings for the 50th time in the generic hotel corridors, the same, sluggish robots trudge around for the 100th time. It even takes dozens of minutes before a new type of enemy finally appears. The metal buckets were apparently released onto Earth by aliens to bore humanity to death with the same old battle formations. Okay, it’s not quite that bad. The androids, metal insects and floating drones may only graze lazily along their paths, but the pleasantly balanced level of difficulty at least makes for exciting battles now and again.
