The game starts off in a delightful bucolic community where people live off the land and wear smocks and build houses on stilts out of wood. Everything is artful chunks of rock, little rivers, and backdrops that scroll and suggest that this paradise goes on as far as we can see. Sadly, invaders are on the way, black metallic ships with cages for capturing people, huge tankers on legs that are presumably here to drink all that water and process all that wood, smaller units that rove around at the human level killing anyone they see. And black goop too – part of the invasion? Something different? Something useful? Let’s see.

It’s a great combo, and as Lana sets off into the wider world it very much feels like a David vs Goliath situation. I wish it carried the same momentum that its opening act right the way through its credits, but that’s unfortunately not the case – puzzles, platforming, and all. A stop-and-smell-the-roses game if there ever was one, Planet of Lana presents stunning vista after stunning vista. The hand-drawn backgrounds are simply beautiful. The journey takes players across forests, deserts, highlands, and more, each offering some of the prettiest and liveliest environments ever to be seen in the genre. A moving soundtrack and ambient audio enhance the presentation, swelling and falling silent where appropriate to best serve the experience.

Lana’s journey doesn’t really have many peaks and troughs, but more like two bombastic book-ends to a very middle of the road… well, middle bit. It didn’t take long for me to get invested in Lana’s journey, with Wishfully working to quickly draw me into the adventure and establish my motivation. Planet of Lana opens during a gentle moment between the protagonist and her sister on the outskirts of a peaceful village they call home. As the music starts to swell to evoke a sense of urgency, I race my back through the village I playfully ventured across just moments before. The contrast between calm and chaos is sharp: The joyful sounds of the once tranquil village are now replaced by screams and the clang of machines as people are taken away. Now alone, with her sister and her village gone, Lana has to set out to find her sibling and save her home. Already, I feel for Lana, who has lost so much so quickly, but there’s a little light to come thanks to her encounter with Mui, who joins you on your journey shortly after.

The story of the game is a very emotional and interesting one: everyone from Lana’s village has been kidnapped by evil robots, including her sister. She embarks on a journey to find everyone and free them, having to avoid more robots that are trying to kidnap/kill her. On that journey, she meets a cat-like creature, which she calls Mui. After getting a new adorable best friend, she continues whilst getting help from her cute kitty with solving puzzles and evading enemies. The different puzzles and locations can sometimes feel repetitive but are mostly great and make you think about how to solve them.

The pacing can feel a little slow at times, but not enough to be a problem, and the immense amount of effort put into crafting the world and making it so great definitely compensates for that. Plana of Lana starts at our protagonist’s village, in which she is playing a game with Ilo. She runs throughout the village and Lana tries to follow her, passing by a grave that they both stop to look at; they eventually arrive at the end of a cliff, where they see a robot invasion being launched against their world.
