Had Save Me Mr Tako come out during the time in gaming that it pays homage to, the heyday of the original Game Boy, I think we’d be living in Tako’s world. The game clearly draws inspiration from classics like Kirby’s Dreamland in the way its overworld is designed, games like Shantae in its gameplay, and games like Pokèmon and The Legend of Zelda in its music design. Unlike so many games from the early platforming era, the story in Save Me Mr Tako is actually the heart of the game. When you first boot up, you get three difficulty options to choose from. The easiest mode gives you copious lives to begin. It is meant for enjoying the story, since, on harder difficulties where you start with fewer lives or have a permanently fixed number and only one hit, game over means starting from the beginning of a level. And the levels get quite hard. The story is not always perfectly translated into English, but overall, it’s emotional, it’s thought-provoking, and it’s not the least bit corny, despite the farfetched premise. About the game

Save Me Mr Tako originally launched back in 2018 and despite being a fun and enjoyable title had a few bugs and hard difficulty that made it overlooked at the time. It was also never able to be patched during its initial release, so ended up being quite the niche indie that didn’t make a bigger splash. Fortunately it was revealed that Tako was getting a second change with a brand new release nearly three years later with a Definitive Edition. With plans to bring fixes and changes the original needed, Save Me Mr Tako: Definitive Edition has brought back the most lovable octopus and another opportunity to introduce players to a fantastic adventure.

The world in Save Me Mr Tako is ruled by two major species: the humans and octopus. These two have been at odds for some time now, and war is brewing in the horizon when a group of octopus attack a ship and take it over. One octopus among them by the name of Tako decides this isn’t right and saves the last human aboard out of defiance. While most of his Octopus brethren don’t agree with his actions and side with his brother, Tako is set on not fighting in a war that doesn’t need to happen. Due to his compassion towards humans Tako is blessed by a fairy with the ability to breathe on land and thus begins his journey to try to stop the fighting between humans and octopus in hopes they can get along. Gameplay review

I first played and reviewed Save me Mr Tako back in 2018 and recall wrestling between giving it 3 or 4 stars only to decide on the former. However, now that I’ve played it again, I must say that it has finally won me over and the enhancements featured in this Definitive Edition are surely enough for an extra star. The most substantial addition is that the original was a bit all over the place with its challenge but that’s been smoothed out here and there’s even a new difficult select if you’d like to adjust it further. Another improvement that I love is the fact that the colour palettes automatically swap as you move between locations which made me feel as if I was playing it on Super Game Boy. Throw in a hint system and more content and you’re left with one well-honed 2D platforming adventure!

Save Me Mr Tako is a platformer with some adventure and Metroidvania elements. You bop from level to level, jumping and inking your way from one side to the other. Your ink freezes enemies and turns them into platforms, making timing your jumps and shots key to traversing the elements. Your jump in this game is much higher than you’d typically jump in platformers, making the physics slightly off from your platforming muscle memory. Additionally, there is a big emphasis on watching where you jump. The game implores you early on to hold the down button to check what’s below you before jumping because there are often enemies, pits, and spikes to mess with you.
