Quests that have you criss-crossing all over the map. The levels are usually found in pockets of subspace in buildings that typically end with a boss fight and a reward of a new instrument or band member. An array of challenges also dot the landscape, rewarding you with rarer items if you complete certain tasks in a time limit. The entirety of the game isn’t all that long, landing in the 5 to 10-hour range depending on how much of a completionist you are the most part, I played through it by my lonesome and had a blast, bouncing around all of the seven different playable characters and giggling at all the video game references. I even was able to pick up on some deep cut Scott Pilgrim gags (it’s been a while since I’ve seen the movie or show and even longer since I read the books).

It’s fun to just see the light bounce and movement any given screen has. The world is gorgeous and vibrant. And then there’s the Anamanaguchi soundtrack. The original game had a great soundtrack from these chiptune legends but the new one feels like a step forward. It’s filled with earworms and excitement. And I’ll also use this space to plug Anamanaguchi’s awesome album Anyway from last year (it rips!). EX immediately shows you it means business with its tutorial. While in most games I’d immediately groan at the concept, I quickly became convinced it was a good idea. It dawned on me about 10 minutes into it, when the game was still introducing new mechanics. EX borrows from virtually the entire buffet of Capcom and SNK fighting mechanics.

Playing through EX often feels like a mini fighting game, just with way shorter matches and far more enemies. While the more nuanced fighting tees EX up to be a more challenging game overall, you have plenty of options to dull the pain. Just like the original, EX takes (several) pages from River City Ransom, allowing you to buff up your stats and level up with food and equipment. Gameplay purists will undoubtedly hate the RPG angle. It dilutes the kind of balancing that the excess of fighting mechanics implies. I ultimately didn’t mind it though, because by the endgame, stats alone won’t be enough to get you by. The items and stats add on a layer of strategy that you don’t get from other beat-em-ups, as mixing and matching your item effects with your assists unlocks potent strategies beyond the bounds of what these kinds of games are normally about. This angle makes EX feel distinct from the more traditional brawlers on the market. When I first saw this stuff, I got a little worried. The first Scott Pilgrim game has a notoriously slow start because a good chunk of your power came from progression, and while I don’t mind a grindy beat ‘em up like Castle Crashers every once in awhile.
