There are clear contrasts between each setting too that make them uniquely captivating to explore, from the lush bamboo forest of the opening level through to the disgustingly gloopy explorable innards of a Kaiju that seem like something straight out of a Rick and Morty episode. You’ll go through Neon-soaked cityscapes, deserts, weird labs, and more as you chase down Ruse and his gang of goons. Where Shinobi shines is in its artwork. Art of Vengeance has some of the greatest character animations I’ve ever seen. None shines more than the titular Shinobi, as his slicing, dicing, and magical moves look incredible every time. While the backgrounds aren’t “bad,” they do not match the stellar quality of the hand-drawn characters. What can match it is the combat. Lizardcube takes their excellent work on Streets of Rage 4 and dials it up to 10 with Shinobi.  Joe is fast, fluid, and extremely deadly. X is your quick attack, while Y is used in a variety of heavy moves. While the game features linear level design, there are Metroidvania elements, with progression blockers requiring you to replay levels after unlocking abilities tied to later missions. It’s been a while since we saw that all-too-brief few seconds of reveal footage.

Unique combat moves, acquire Amulets for enhanced abilities, and discover Ningi tools to overcome obstacles and uncover new paths.

After playing the Summer Game Fest build for myself, it not only seems like the perfect game to lead the comeback charge and convince non-believers, but also might end up being 2025’s best ninja game in a year with some seriously stacked competition kicked off right at the beginning of the game as our stoic shinobi trains one of his apprentices and fends off some basic thugs from attacking his home, Oboro Village. It’s a cool game that’s rich with Sega nostalgia, and you’ll probably have fun with it if it seems like your kind of thing. However, much like my high school friend, Art of Vengeance feels stretched thin by the sheer amount of bases it tries to cover despite its relatively small scope. Art of Vengeance places players in the shoes of Sega’s original Shinobi protagonist, Joe Musashi.
