Which I didn’t mind because I’m not a fan of silly mini-games myself. Outside of town you can walk to the beach (and beyond it try to reach an off-shore lighthouse), an observatory on top of a hill, and an expansive forest just waiting for you to find an oil lamp so you can explore it. The cloudy night skies and mountainous horizons all around you are beautiful examples of artistry. Leading to a greater mystery involving a hilarious cast of characters as they uncover the paranormal events occurring within the town. Any good point-and-click adventure title lives and dies by its cast, and thankfully, Slender Threads features a wonderful and diverse bunch of weirdos. Harvey himself is an entertaining bloke whose naivety sometimes gets him into trouble, or, on the flip side, works in his favor. He’s not the only character that feels inept in Villa Ventana, though. The police officers are rather peculiar, a kooky doctor seems totally off her rocker, and the town drunk—well, he’s the town drunk.

You thoroughly entertained throughout its 8-10 hour duration. Harvey himself, well, to say he’s insecure would be an understatement. He’s a pessimist at heart, going through life waiting for the worst to happen and never really believing that he’s worth more than the raggy clothes on his back. He’s got a likeable and relatable sense of humour, which is thanks to some excellent voice acting (Joe Gaudet as Harvey) and great writing. In fact, all of the characters that Harvey interacts with, whether it’s the charismatic real estate agent or the cranky chef, are superbly voiced and written.

The only downside is that some of the characters feel underused – there are a few that I would have liked to have seen a little more from. Visually, Slender Threads is a winner, especially when it comes to the character designs. If the pitch was Tim Burton’s take on the new Monkey Island game, then Blyts has nailed the brief. Characters have almost puppet-like features and every one of them stands out in their own way, so you can tell that Blyts has made a big effort to make them all unique also helps bring Villa Ventana to life, with each location’s music composed to maximise the impact of each spot.
