The first screen of the game after the title screen is something Super Mario 64 taught you through an optional signpost 30 years ago. Let that speak for what the demographic of this game is. You are going to be taking pictures of Anya and the family in various happenings. Each picture is graded on whether the camera is in focus, you have the right angle, and what Anya is doing at the time. It’s essentially Pokemon Snap, but instead of annoying the local wildlife, you’re taking a picture of Anya annoying Loid. If you feel like making your photos stand out more, you also have the option of dressing up each member of the Forger family in different outfits. Most of your actions in Spy x Anya reward you with points you can use to either unlock items to use for unique photo opportunities, or different clothes to wear during outings and around the house.

There are many peculiar things that can catch Anya’s attention, like butterflies, swings, and fun sights during outings!

Each item of clothing has a unique buff, such as increasing Anya’s movement speed or giving you discounts in the game’s store, but it’s an aspect of the game that feels crammed in with very little thought or reason for its existence. If you’re keeping up with Tatsuya Endō’s work, you’ll know that the protagonists of Spy x Family are the spy Loid, the assassin Yor, the telepath Anya, and the dog Bond, who can see into the future . They all try to form the perfect family while hiding their true identities, with the viewer being the only one who knows them (aside from Anya, since she’s able to read her parents’ minds). This is repeated over and over again in the anime, but it’s not the case in SPY×ANYA: Operation Memories . The game assumes that you’ve come in because you know the family and their great adventures well enough, so it doesn’t bother explaining how the family comes to be, what Operation Strix is, and all the other elements that make up the story. This is a game that’s been developed with fans in mind only, so be well prepared before entering SPY×ANYA: Operation Memories. Anya has been given an assignment to create a diary, so the Forgers resolve to go on trips – called Outings, or Ootings in Anya-speak – where she can play, study, and take pictures. It feels a bit like a very guided Pokémon Snap but without some of the random interactions that made that game such a fun journey. Here it is very easy to decide what you’re going to take a picture of and to get the snap you want. The controls are forgiving enough that it will be rare you don’t get top marks for your photography skills. You just need to get the focus right, find the right angle, and pick the most dramatic moment to capture, all things that the game tells you how to do each time.

Based on the popular “Spy x Family” manga and anime, Spy x Anya: Operation Memories is a slice-of-life take on the daily and, at times, secret late night activities of the Forger family. For folks unfamiliar with the source material, Spy x Family chronicles the lives of the young esper Anya, the skilled assassin Yor, and the peerless spy Loid as they pretend to be the perfect family. You even get multiple attempts each Outing, so there really is no excuse not to get the maximum score possible.
