To do so, Gabby and Pandy Paws have to explore the ins and outs of their iconic dollhouse, by traversing to the various levels using the Cat-A-Vator – the show’s sentient elevator. Each of the themed worlds has a small storyline that follows a fairly linear path. Through various tasks, we can collect the party ingredients we’re looking for to get things going in the dollhouse. There are also various mini-games where we can face further challenges. In each game, as well as in the game world, you can collect an in-game currency that looks like cookies. This currency can be used to pay for participation in the mini-games. Outfits for Gabby, for example, await us as a reward for a successful round. A great feature for discovering Gabby’s world together is the local co-op mode.

If you’re unfamiliar with Gabby’s Dollhouse as a franchise, it’s a super-colourful Netflix series that mixes together animation and live action, and it’s aimed at pre-school aged children. It’s since spawned a range of toys, Lego and a feature-length film — and with the movie hitting cinemas this week, the release of the game is no coincidence. This isn’t a game of the film, though; it’s very much its own thing, simply set in the world of the Netflix series. Ready to Party doesn’t look exactly like the TV series it’s based upon (there are no live-action segments here, for starters).

A good enough job of aping its appearance. It boasts a colourful, clean 3D style, with many of its levels sporting very cute papercraft elements. You’ll find all the characters from the Netflix series here too, and as far as I can tell, many of the voice actors have reprised their roles, giving the game a much-appreciated air of authenticity. The minigames aren’t amazing, but for kids, they’re fun enough and, most importantly, they’re easy to get the hang of. They’re varied, from colouring in paintings to playing a quick game of bowling, and once they’re unlocked, they can be played as many times as you’d like.

Needless to say, it’s not the sort of game that ever gets repetitive. The immediate standout feature for me, as a parent, is the game’s sheer accessibility. Each room in the dollhouse sends you to new lands with low-stress playgrounds to explore. Collecting coins allows you to unlock and play a variety of minigames. The game focuses on simple, joyous fun rather than complex or frustrating challenges. The platforming sections are intentionally short and straightforward.
