The plot itself is completely banal and only serves to repeatedly make fun of well-known fantasy elements. But that’s always the case with video games that really want to be funny: Here, too, the shot backfires on the whole. With its dialogue, “Dungeons 4” is mostly reminiscent of “Borderlands 3”, in which it tries almost desperately to get even one laugh from the player fires the joke cannon so relentlessly and consistently that this possible negative point turns into a positive. We have a two-level (literally) strategy game before us — the events unfold simultaneously underground and on the surface. In the depths of a fairy-tale kingdom, a hand familiar to genre veterans marks out areas for mining operations, selects rooms for construction, and grabs subordinates by the scruff of the neck, guided solely by their own desires and instincts. Under the rays of the sun, indirect control and construction of a huge base are replaced by a dimensionless frame and a crowd of obedient blockheads ready to carry out any order.

2-player co-op multiplayer with both players managing one Dungeon together. All maps from the skirmish mode and the campaign are playable in co-op.

The problem is that one of these aspects was implemented at a primitive level, and the second (also imperfect) suffers because of the need to devote time to it has not made any huge leaps forward from its direct predecessor. Instead, the game has focused on existing strengths, expanded on them, and rounded out some of the gameplay’s pitfalls. I haven’t played the earlier titles in the series, so this is my entry point. If you’re in the same boat, wondering if you need to catch up first, then there’s no need to fret. The first few levels do a great job of introducing the game’s mechanics with a slow and steady pace, so you’ll be destroying Heroes in no time at all. The game isn’t entirely dissimilar to the Bullfrog classic Dungeon Keeper but with the addition of a number of RTS elements. You start out building your base in the underworld, but you will need to gain “Evilness” in order to research stronger monsters and new or upgraded rooms to build.

Build their underground strongholds, these hardy little fellows compete with the Ever-Expanding Evil for space and resources.

This is earned by killing Heroes, and whilst you will get some come into your base, the main source is above ground by infiltrating the Heroes at their camps. This means that you have to carefully balance the base-building below ground with the looting and pillaging above it. There is a cap on the number of creatures that you can have, meaning that you have to assess just how many of your troops you can risk sending on the surface to destroy Hero camps. Send out too few, and they’ll just get killed in action, but send out too many, and your base might be at risk of being invaded and destroyed. Clan O’Conall and the Crown of the Stag Switch NSP

This is only a part of the game, and the base-building aspect is still the most prominent, but having this blend of genres does a lot to differentiate it from the earlier games that inspired it kicks off with a seemingly final battle that isn’t very definitive, as things go slightly south for the home team. The Absolute Evil and his minions have taken over the land and few heroes remain fighting against their regime, but Thalya’s (the Evil’s most trusted servant) brother manages to hold the fort (many of them, actually) in spite of not being too brilliant.

In fact, none of the major characters are too intelligent, and that’s part of the joke. This is a game filled to the brim with comedy, pop culture references, and meta bits that are sprinkled throughout the scripts. And there’s a lot of chatter as you build up the dark empire and try to snuff out the remaining light in the world. You can thankfully adjust the amount of dialogues (from the narrator as well as the characters) which aren’t essential, since they can get distracting and annoying quite often despite the mostly charming writing.

We are the embodiment of absolute evil, doing everything we can to destroy everything that is good by disgusting it. We are a dungeon lord who slaughters cute unicorns, massacres villagers, attacks sheep that hang out on the road let alone sheep  and is at war underground and above ground to crush all the good under the name of “Heroes”. Thalya, whom we also know from the third game, is a dark elf. She offers her services to the absolute evil known as “Absolute Evil”, that is, to fight against goodness, due to the evil taking over her from her dual personality consisting of good and evil.
