Cave Story is the newest indie title to launch on the Nintendo Switch, a platform that’s actually represented indie developers pretty well so far, thanks in part to publisher Nicalis. If you’re not familiar with Cave Story, it’s a Metroidvania style game that was first released in 2004 for PC, developed by one guy, Daisuke Amaya, who clearly poured a lot of love into those original diminutive sprites. As far as ports go, Cave Story+ appears to be pretty flawless. It’s a great looking game on the Switch, perfect to pick-up and play in portable mode, and it remains one of the best Metroidvania style games around, despite being 13 years old at this point. It controls well, the exploration aspect is top notch, and the music is great. Seriously, if you haven’t played Cave Story before, this is a fantastic version of the game.

The onset of the game drops you into the role of a small,

Pixelated protagonist with no name. You’ll quickly encounter a bit of danger before discovering your first weapon, which will in turn let you break through a small barrier, at which point you’ll expose yourself to a much larger world to explore. There are new weapons to acquire, heart containers to expand, and a whole lot of jumping around.  It’s one of the earliest indie Metroidvania titles out there, but it’s also one of the best. If you’ve never experienced Cave Story, you’ll definitely be in for a treat. For everyone else it might be a tougher sell. I think it’s priced fairly at .99, but if you’ve played through the game on WiiWare, PC, and so on, there’s not a lot of meaningful additions being made to this version of the game.

Controls are easy to understand

The Cave Story+ controls are easy to understand, much in the same way that old school 8-bit games are. The A button controls Quote’s jumps, while the B button handles firing whichever gun you have equipped. The X button will bring up an equipment screen that allows you to change weapons or to check your map. The L and R buttons will also allow you to switch between your weapons, which we prefer, but to each their own. You can also take your pick of any of the Switch’s available control options, from single Joy-Con to Pro controller. What makes Cave Story so great, however, is the impeccable level design. New enemies and traps are introduced with a level of finesse that isn’t often seen in AAA titles, let alone indie releases. One element that stood out to us happened early on when a series of pitfalls were thrown our way. The first pit was easy enough to fall into, but contained nothing. The very next series of them contained spikes that would spell certain doom, though we had been trained to look for these.

Narrative-wise about story

The very beginning of the game details how the story takes place. You start by watching a short dialogue that does not make a lot of sense at the time, but portrays the feeling of how the characters interact with each other. This plus edition even has a nice new addition in the form of character’s portrait animations; a small feature that surprisingly helps in making the many NPCs even more charismatic. This short scene acts as the game’s tutorial, teaching you the basic standard controls. You’ll find that both Y and A are used for jumping, B shoots your equipped weapon, X opens the inventory, the shoulder buttons allow you to rotate between your weapons, and with the down button you can interact with the environment. I played with this standard setup for the first quarter of the game, but found it somewhat uncomfortable (and not very intuitive). Fortunately, there is an option in the game’s menu for using flipped inputs.
