You’re given first-aid kits for health, coffee tablets for stamina, and rosaries for “faith,” which turns the game into a sort of pseudo-FPS; you aim August’s cross at things and hold-click to exorcise them, both inanimate objects and horrible demons (there is also a weapon that turns it into an actual FPS briefly). I will mention that I never ran out of any of the consumables, so that’s something to consider. As above, so below. The writing may have influenced the screenplay at times, since the voice acting undoubtedly had a few oddly written passages. Overall, I had a positive time with the game. The plot was fantastic, and while it was a little predictable, it was still engaging, and the landscapes, gaming mechanics, and overall game were delightful. This game is about Aughust, a Catholic priest who is entrusted with exorcising demons from a mansion full of bad juju.

The case stuck into Aughust’s head for more than 30 years, and now, it’s finally the time to finish it!

I truly adored this game. It’s not very lengthy, taking approximately 3 hours to complete, but it’s worth playing through. It’s a little pricey for how short the game is, but it’s worth supporting the independent developer, who definitely put a lot of time and effort into this project. I believe the audio is poorly mixed. When there is action, it is really loud. Parts of the game that should not be so loud are really loud. At some point, flies buzz about you and it becomes bothersome since all you hear is incessant buzzing, which is annoying. Surprisingly, the only thing that is not loud are the cutscenes. They are of typical volume. There is also no way to modify the game volume at all. Aughust’s eyesight changes somewhat, which indicates that he is losing stamina and health.

It’s not a major issue with stamina, but it’s difficult to assess your health during battles since there’s so much going on that you don’t always realise you’re about to die. The game will instruct you to use a medkit when necessary, but sometimes it is too late by the time you press the key to heal. I get that it is done for immersion purposes, but it may be unpleasant at times. I collected secrets during my playing, however it appears that they were never opened when I returned to the main screen.

With that out of the way, let’s get into the review: I really appreciated Devil Inside Us: Roots of Evil. I felt it was well-paced, full of tension, and had me on the edge of my seat. I’m not a huge fan of jumpscares because they’re typically cheap and badly executed, but this game did them properly and gave me a real shock. I appreciated the tiny notes left about the house that provided context for the world and the families within it.
