“Eventide: Slavic Fable” is a hidden object puzzle adventure game developed by The House of Fables. The game features a variety of gameplay and story elements that make it an engaging and enjoyable experience. Some of the notable features of the game include:

Making your way through a series of static screens reveals a multitude of puzzles and a safe but mildly engaging narrative. In this case, you play as a young botanist as she visits her Grandmother in the eerie but beautiful Slavic heritage park. Unfortunately – as always is the case – your trip doesn’t go quite to plan, and you end up risking life and limb to save poor old Granny from the clutches of a terrifying monster.

Run-of-the-mill, everyday stuff in the world of Artifex Mundi games. Eventide: Slavic Fable is a slightly newer title than other Artifex Mundi back catalogue games that have made their way to Xbox One. With some dating back as far as 2011 (Enigmatis: The Ghosts of Maple Creek), Eventide‘s relatively recent PC and tablet launch date of November 2015 shows in its slightly crisper, slightly improved cut scene quality. As always, the majority of the game is made up of carefully detailed and visually pleasing hand-drawn stills. Artifex Mundi’s signature art style is on top form here, with a series of locations that are thoroughly enchanting. Characters are markedly improved also – partly due to the fact that along with the cast of humans, this time anthropomorphic woodland creatures are along for the ride too. These animals are as cute as they are otherworldly, with a charm and mystique that single-handedly makes you want to continue on through the story. The game plays out similar to the other games from Artifex Mundi and you navigate through a series of well drawn 2D backgrounds solving puzzles along the way. In controlling the game you have a circle which you move around the screen and you have to interact with objects, sometimes zooming into certain specific locations. Interaction is limited to pressing the X button to touch objects, or sometimes opening up your menu to combine items together. You have no direct control over a character and progression is simply on a screen by screen basis.

The game features various collectibles that players can find throughout the game, including flowers, herbs, and potions.

Unlike the other games I’ve played Eventide: Slavic Fable relies less on the traditional hidden object puzzles, although these are in here. Often during this game you’ll be finding points of interest on the main screens to uncover keys to allow you to open boxes or chests, which in turn may provide a piece of a puzzle for later on. On the whole the puzzles felt much more involved than in previous titles. There was more backtracking between screens and often more to collect, other than just locating hidden objects, and this leant the game a breadth making it feel larger than it is.

Regular players will instantly enjoy the difference in story-telling here. While the ‘kidnapping’ plot is present as per usual it does take it in a different & more enjoyable direction. This is easily one of the most fantastical stories & vibrant looking games Artifex Mundi have made so far. Where issues do arise though is with the hidden object scenes & the puzzles. The former are very unimaginative in design while the latter are uninspired. Far too easy for most of the games 3-4 hour playtime. An additional chapter adds an extra 30-60 minutes to the overall completion time. A welcome addition even if it doesn’t really add anything to the overall product. The Last Door Complete edition
