It’s easy to see how much style has been put into the game from the battles the player gets involved in. Raiden flows from one attack to another, incorporating a wide variety of actions like parry stances, dropping in from the air and somehow wielding his sword with his foot almost as often as his hands. Every fight is filled with dynamic clashing effects as weapons clash against metal, explosions from enemies that try to take a more collateral damage approach to the cyborg ninja and flying debris as a result of the sheer destructive of fights. Indeed the reduction of most things to pieces is a big part of the visual flair, especially when entering blade mode to slow time and slice your target up.

Even the innards of these cyborgs are textured in a way you’d expect from something that should have got destroyed by a high frequency blade, and while there are obvious limits to what in the environment you can destroy it’s still great to see that there are plenty of objects you can slash apart either for progression or just because you can. Compared to the high tech appearance of characters and special effects, the environments might come across as a little ordinary. Dilapidated cities that have suffered the damaging effects of war and a suspiciously spacious sewer system that stretches out under a town are the kinds of places you’ll visit where Raiden and pals stick out. It’s an interesting contrast between the hi-tech companies that have benefited from the war and the places that were ravaged by them, and I found it interesting to go through some of these locations to see what effect current and past events have had on them. The cyborg designs are pretty interesting, showing various irregular parts and interface connections that indicate how a body with cyborg parts might not be the most appealing idea. But holy crap, smiling in this game looks so creepy. Like anytime someone has a big grin plastered across their face I’m left wondering if it’s the result of brain damage, with the exception of a girl towards the end of the game.

The bigger graphical problem comes from the huge frame rate dips though, primarily when you’ve cut something into numerous pieces. It’s like the system can’t handle so many objects at once, and trying to adjust various graphics settings down to compensate doesn’t seem to matter, which in itself was already a compromise for someone used to playing PC games on high settings. It doesn’t make the game unplayable but it’s really noticeable when it happens. It wouldn’t do to discuss the game’s music without bringing up Back to Nature, which is the standout song that you’ll hear during the game. Evoland Legendary Edition Switch

Not the only quality track of course, as there are plenty of J-Rock tunes peppered through the go hand in hand with the frantic sword slashing of the adventure. There’s loads of voice acting as per the norm for Metal Gear games, as Raiden debates the nature of politics with his adversaries or he receives intel from his team mates at Maverick. The story feels a bit messy though, because it feels like most characters aren’t really given much chance to be fleshed out. It’s not even something that can be addressed with past series experience since we’re dealing with mostly fresh faces. It’s just hard to care about most of them when there’s little screen time or development. Sam probably gets the best out of it from the antagonists, and you have a one to one with the big bad of the game.

Where you might actually be questioning the purpose of events that have transpired so far. The main draw comes down to Raiden himself, who finds himself reflecting on the way he lives and the actions he’s taken thus far. This is someone who’s already had to deal with conflicting elements of his personality and this game helps to define that much further, showing changes with each mission he takes on. The repeated interruptions to service the plot can break the pacing of the gameplay though. While I usually don’t like the button mashing slice and dice (unless it comes with demons, vampires and/or sarcastic comments), I did my best to give Revengeance its due.

The battle mechanics are well thought out and the controls are mostly intuitive, though there is a Blade Mode that is not and requires quite a bit of practice to get the hang of. Blade Mode allows you to focus only on your sword, forgoing movement in exchange for exactitude in aim with your sword by using the left stick to aim your field of vision and the right to slice at precise angles. Alternately, you can use the X and Y buttons (on Xbox 360) to slice horizontally or vertically instead of using the right stick.
