It is on a loop that doesn’t last very long and whilst it is pleasant enough, it does get tiresome over time. Shivering Stone is a glorified sliding block puzzle game. I have reviewed a few of these before, Cubicban and Super Glow Puzzle come to mind. The only difference is you control a little guy and walk around pushing blocks. Push the blocks over the slots and the gates open and you walk into the next puzzle. There are fifty puzzle in all. And that’s about it. No story, nothing. While the difficulty increases throughout the 50 stages, the challenge remains more easily paced. Though the puzzle genre isn’t renowned for its captivating plots, I like it when a developer tries something new. Sadly, though, Shivering Stone fails to break the mould and this was unfortunate. Additionally, the gameplay is linear and this reduces creativity further. Accordingly, there are limited ways to solve each problem, and it takes forever to introduce new mechanics. Alongside this, you are not compelled to complete each level, and you don’t feel any empathy towards the protagonist.

Instead, you plod along as you methodically solve each issue. Now, I know a story isn’t essential, but it would have added depth to an otherwise run-of-the-mill game. What’s more, if a timer and a sense of danger had been incorporated, it would have made the action more demanding and dramatic. When I heard about Shivering Stone, a game centered around the same concept of sliding on ice, I was filled with anticipation. I couldn’t wait to sit down and play it, hoping to relive those cherished memories. The idea of a game that could bring back the joy and challenge of Pryce’s gym was exciting.
