Turns out that a new anti-ageing miracle drug — Eternights — has been mutating humans into grotesque monsters with one goal in mind: kill anything with a pulse. It doesn’t take long for the protagonist’s luck to run out, and is captured by a stranger wielding a rather large twin-bladed sword, who proceeds to slice off their right arm. All seems lost as they begin to bleed out, but wait! That mystery woman they matched with on their online dating app appears in a vision, and she just so happens to be some sort of ethereal being, gifting the main character the ability to fight back against the once-human menace.

As the deadline looms, you will have to quickly overcome traps, puzzles, and dancing minigames to make it through in time.

She definitely seems to have an ulterior motive, though, and she may not be quite as friendly as first thought. I don’t want to spoil anything past the opening section of the game, but I did enjoy Eternights’ story as a whole. The pacing wasn’t perfect, but I genuinely enjoyed having some downtime and being able to interact with the characters I’d met along the way, learning more about who they are or getting flirty with whoever looked in my general direction. Being “not quite as good” still makes Eternights’ narrative largely enjoyable. Unless, of course, you’re not really into sexual innuendos and crude humour, because there is a huge amount of both during the less dramatic scenes. You progress through dungeon areas, navigating disturbing environments while fighting monsters. You string combos with simple button presses as you try to evade incoming enemy attacks. Some enemy types and bosses in particular have strong barriers that require numerous elemental QTE attacks to destroy completely before you can actually deal real damage. As noted above, of course, what sets Eternights apart from plenty of other games with a heavy emphasis on romance and relationships is that it’s also a hack & slash dungeon-crawler.

Hacking away at deformed monsters, but the incongruity is part of the fun, too. It’s kind of neat to go from deciding how you want to flirt with someone one moment to figuring out your timing for a dodge and attack the next. Mind you, the action definitely starts feeling a little repetitive after a while. While the importance of dodges and QTEs mean that the combat never feels totally stale or like something you could do on autopilot, at the same time, after a couple of dungeons you’ll definitely feel like you’re just hacking away at the same drones to kill time before getting to the much more skill-based boss fights.

As someone who prefers real-time action to turn-based combat, I liked it, but it’s worth noting that Eternights can feel a little repetitive differs from something like Persona is the combat, because this is a pure hack and slash action game. You start Eternights with a fairly basic combo attack, which ends in a big slash that helps fill your elemental attack meter. Once you’ve filled the elemental attack meter you can unleash a more powerful attack (complete with quick time events) that breaks through enemy barriers, and that’s pretty much how you deal with most of the enemies you encounter.
