Fall of Light: Darkest Edition Switch NSP Free Download Romslab A dark and dreary medieval world. Lots of obtuse and cliched references to dark forces and evil people doing predictably evil things. Slow melee combat with a focus on stamina management. Shrines that become spawn points when you die. Enemies that revive every time you’re resurrected. Sound familiar yet? Developer RuneHeads isn’t hiding just how much FromSoftware’s Souls’ series has influenced almost every facet of its dungeon-crawling title, but there’s a fine line between paying tribute and pastiche, and too often Fall of Light: Darkest Edition stumbles into the clutches of the latter. Thing is, if you’re going to be as bold as to imitate such an acclaimed milestone in modern game design, you need to at least do it well. At least then you’re a ‘soulless’ rip-off rather than a cheap knock-off. But it doesn’t take long for Fall of Light’s inherent problems to emerge. In the role of Nyx – an ageing knight who needs to lead his daughter Aether through a perilous set of dungeons in order to reach the safety of some sunlight at the other end – you’ll need to protect your charge and ensure the various minions you encounter don’t snatch her.
20 different battle stances, including two-handed and dual-wielding
As alluded to already, the plot is something you can soak up and build upon at your own pace. It’s never going to sit alongside its inspirations as far as quality is concerned, but I will commend Fall of Light for being bold enough to tackle such an inclusive and distinct design. Though again, this is really an aspect of the game that will vary from player to player, simply due to the way that it’s laid out. In regards to the gameplay, it does take some getting used to during the initial stages of play. Not so much that it detracts from the adventure at hand, but there is a steep(ish) learning curve. The actual gameplay is much what you would expect to see from a game of this type. You’ll traverse the dark and dank world within, uncover heaps of secrets, and slay whatever stands between you and your goal. The controls respond wonderfully and remain precise across all fronts, leaving most failures down to player error. I rather enjoyed the world within, as well as the game’s visual design. There’s a lot of variation throughout the entirety of play as far as the environments are concerned, ensuring that the vast and daunting trek rarely becomes repetitive or boring. Fall of Light sports an almost isometrical-like perspective.
10 weapon classes covering both short-range and long-range weaponry
This works well with the game’s visuals, which, whilst far from groundbreaking, are well detailed and refined from start to finish. The same can be said about the audio, which upholds the gameplay’s theme nicely with sharp, accurate cues. I was slightly somewhat disappointed with the soundtrack and felt as though something with a bit more kick would have been better suited, or at least something darker and more inline with the adventure, but for the most part, it gets the job done throughout, nevertheless. Two-man Italian developer Rune Heads has used Ico as its other big inspiration, but much like the attempt to ape the solid systems of Souls. Cyber Protocol Prologue Switch

This indie title fails to capture what made Team Ico’s PS2 classic so evocative. The game never provides a reason to care for her from a narrative perspective, and while her presence does provide helpful buffs (such as increasing the power of your attacks) her role almost always devolves into a 12-plus-hour-long escort mission. And if you die, she dies too, but while your soul is restored at a nearby bonfire – sorry, we meant ‘shrine’ – you’ll need to backtrack to where you died in order to restore her. A majority of your time in Fall of Light will be spent swinging various weapons at an endless parade of incredibly similar humanoid enemies, so it’s perpetually frustrating to have to do so via a completely unintuitive combat model.
Fight Shadows, soldiers of darkness and underworld bosses
Nyx is apparently so old his animations are glacial, leading to painfully slow swings of your weapon (even as a light attack). A big part of the problem comes down to input lag. It simply takes too long for a button press to manifest itself as an on-screen command, and considering its entire combat system is built on the ability to dodge, block with your shield and strike, you’re either cut down because the game didn’t respond in time or because your stamina ran out too quickly. In regards to the combat, this also gets thumbs up from me. There’s no shortage of weapon classes to take to, ranging from close-range weapons, crossbows, and shields.

This sits decently with the game’s healthy serving of enemy variants. In fact, it’s here in which a level of strategy plays a key role. Each weapon class behaves differently to the next across a range of different factors. Some are slower than others but pack more of a punch, some are quicker but sacrifice a pounding for fluidity, and then there’s some that sit somewhere in the middle. Safe to say, there’s a flavor for every situation. The enemy AI is on point at all times and will exploit your weaknesses if you let your guard down or find yourselves in a sticky situation. There’s monsters and bosses of all forms and sizes, many of which take some time to suss out before you begin making easy work of them. This, again, feeds back into the weapon class system, along with some common sense. Cyjin: The Cyborg Ninja Switch
