Here in America, the release of the series has been a bit spotty, as Square began its RPG rebirth primarily in Japan, with English speaking gamers playing second seat. As the years have passed, gaming coverage has smoothed out between the regions, as Square merged with Enix Software and began maximizing the Final Fantasy franchise. Games like Final Fantasy Origins, Chronicles, and Anthology ensured that nearly every game in the series was able to be played on PSX. ROMSLAB.COM Best Switch Games

FINAL FANTASY III” is the third installment in the “FINAL FANTASY” series, originally released in Japan in 1990. Here are some of its key features:
-
-
- Job system: “FINAL FANTASY III” introduced the now-iconic job system to the series, allowing players to switch between different classes for their characters, each with its own unique abilities and strengths.
- Four main characters: The game features four main characters – Luneth, Arc, Refia, and Ingus – who must embark on a quest to save the world from destruction.
- 3D graphics: “FINAL FANTASY III” was the first game in the series to use 3D graphics, giving it a more immersive and visually stunning feel.
- Summons: As with other “FINAL FANTASY” games, “FINAL FANTASY III” features powerful summons that can be called upon in battle to aid the player’s party.
- Job-specific abilities: Each job class in the game has its own set of abilities and spells that can be learned and used by characters.
-
Players can travel between different areas of the game world using airships, which can be customized and upgraded over the course of the game.
In the meantime, the Game Boy Advance is seeing a steady stream of retro love with its own release of the Final Fantasy franchise, including even the world renowned Final Fantasy Tactics. Within the next year or so, each of the original six Final Fantasy games (spanning the original NES and Super NES) will be playable on either GBA or Nintendo DS, and of them all there’s none as anticipated as Final Fantasy III. Now that it’s ready to hit here in America for the first time, however, can a game nearly two decades old still make a splash? The Jackbox Party Pack 4 Switch

During the mixed up time of the Super NES, Final Fantasy went through an odd name change which split the series into two parts for Japan and America. Final Fantasy VI, widely known as the strongest in the 2D series, took the place of Final Fantasy III here in America. Now that the franchise is setting itself straight across the board, the true Japan-only Final Fantasy III is now making its debut on the DS. Rather than bringing a straight port of the game over to the states and calling it a done deal, however, Square Enix instead opted to remake the game. Obviously this is a great achievement on the graphical front, giving the game an awesome stylized look, but there are still areas of the game that simply shouldn’t have been changed.
In addition to the main storyline, “FINAL FANTASY III” features a number of optional dungeons and side quests for players to complete.
Team that with an already very difficult overall mechanic, and you’ve got a game that – while legendary for hardcore gamers – may be amazingly frustrating for the now mainstream Final Fantasy fan. Given the stature of the Final Fantasy series, it’s somewhat surprising to think that only very recently has the entire franchise been made available to a worldwide audience. Up until Final Fantasy VII, Western gamers had been largely ignorant of Square’s premier product. The aforementioned Playstation epic quickly changed that and RPG brand went on to became a household name, kick starting a Western obsession with turn-based Japanese adventure titles. The newly discovered English-speaking fan base began to grow restless and many wondered where the six other Final Fantasy games had gotten to. Never a company to miss additional revenue streams, Square (by this point fused with former rival Enix) slowly began to publish properly translated editions of their former classics. The Playstation was lucky enough to experience two anthology collections and more recently Nintendo’s Gameboy Advance has been granted thoroughly enjoyable ports of the SNES editions. One game in the lineage has so far eluded hardcore fans, howeve.
These iconic yellow birds make an appearance in “FINAL FANTASY III” and can be used as a mode of transportation.
Resplendent in shiny, three-dimensional livery, Square’s untold classic is at long last available for the enjoyment of gamers outside of the Land of the Rising Sun. For those fans that have been weaned on the semi-futuristic worlds displayed in more recent Final Fantasy games, this remake will come as something of a shock. Resolutely ‘old school’ in design and execution, FFIII certainly feels like a game from many moons ago. The storyline definitely isn’t going to win any prizes for originality, but then it was written a decade and a half ago. The player assumes the role of an orphaned teenager who teams up with three other parentless adolescents with the primary aim of restoring peace to their troubled homeland.

And yes, you probably have seen a plot like that several times before. Available on Valve’s Steam platform, Final Fantasy III is a PC remake of the 24-year-old NES classic of the same name, and an unapologetically old-school JRPG. Though lighthearted and cute, the game is brutally unforgiving and demands micromanagement, grinding, and patience to complete. Final Fantasy III is a solid RPG with novel gameplay elements, but it also possesses archaic features that the series has long since abandoned, and not all of them are charming throwbacks.
