And as for what the modifiers do, you’re largely in the dark. You could well up picking something up that gets rid of the excellent weapon you’ve been enjoying, and there’s no way to get it back. Sometimes even after you’ve picked something up, you still won’t be able to figure out exactly what it does, and it’s frustrating. You’ll probably feel at home pretty quickly playing as one of these dunce mages, as The Folly of the Wizards is a twin stick platforming affair. There are also more complex elements you can harness by combining the basic ones, which you’ll be able to experiment with on repeated runs. Alongside the scrolls you’ll find, there are also relics which grant you more exciting upgrades. Want to fire ice cream instead of magic missiles? Of course you do, so pick up that relic and get scooping. Not all relics are quite as daft as this, but they do all change the way you’ll play and provide some nice variety. Granting extra hits against certain elements is always useful, as is switching your shot to a laser for more constant punishment.

More useful than all of these upgrades though are the tomes, which provide you with a powerful special attack that you can only use after killing enough pesky monsters. The upgrades you find will most regularly be in special rooms of the dungeons you explore (that are grid based like The Binding of Isaac and even feature similar locked doors) which house four different characters. There’s a shopkeeper, a creepy witch who wants your blood, and a blob king who will all help you on your way. These characters can also be befriended or upset in conversation, which is a mechanic I wasn’t expecting from a Roguelike. Gameplay is straightforward on paper. Each run drops you into procedurally generated levels where you clear out rooms, collect upgrades, and eventually face off against a boss before moving on. The structure is familiar to roguelike fans, but the way you control your apprentice wizard keeps things lively. You start with a generous toolkit: jump, double jump, dash, and a basic spell attack. The shooting is twin-stick style; you aim with the analogue stick and fire with the trigger.

Keep your wits about you and make the most of the resources bestowed upon you, and you will be fine… probably.

As you progress, you’ll find elemental additions like fire, water, or lightning spells that spice up your attacks. Certain enemies are vulnerable to specific elements. Though useful when the random generation odds weren’t in my favour, I could still get by with good skill. Platforming feels tight enough, though the pacing of the game is slower than you might expect. It’s not a bad thing; the deliberate movement suits the idea that your character isn’t exactly a master sorcerer. But don’t mistake “slow” for “easy.” Folly of the Wizards is tough. Very tough. Expect to fail a lot in this game.

Your health pool is tiny, enemies hit hard, and invulnerability frames after damage are very short, meaning you can get hit multiple times in rapid succession. Health pickups are rare, and currency comes slowly, making upgrades feel hard-earned. This is the sort of game where progress comes from persistence. You’ll gradually learn enemy attack patterns, boss behaviours, and level hazards, and slowly, very slowly, you’ll make it further each run.
