There’s no denying that Alien: Isolation is the most faithful video game adaption of the Alien franchise, but you may not be aware that it’s also one of the finest survival horrors available. Sneaking through vents and down dank corridors of an abandoned space station whilst the persistent threat of a Xenomorph constantly keeps you on your toes is both exhilarating and terrifying, and there’re very few that manage to keep the fear levels up to a maximum. Technically, the Switch port is a superb attempt to keep the fear going on Nintendo’s little beauty of a console, even if there’re a few moments whilst playing docked that do stutter a little. It runs well for the majority, and visually it holds up very well whilst playing, even if some of the cutscenes look more like the PS3/Xbox 360 era – though notably this game came out during a time when games were hitting that older generation as well as the newer one. The lighting is excellent, as is the grainy aesthetic, making it feel like you’re watching the original 1979 Alien movie. Sound design is phenomenal, with every clank and hiss that comes from the space station making you soil yourself, never quite knowing if it’s the alien or simply an issue with the station’s rattling exterior.

Gmaeplay

It’s hard to believe that Alien: Isolation is five years old now. I remember booting the game, scared but optimistic, that it could go either way after the disappointing Colonial Marines. Thankfully, everything I enjoyed about the franchise was brought to life in Isolation with a degree of authenticity like no other. Now, five years on, the game has come to the Switch and remains just as impressive. It’s still bound to be polarising, with its unforgiving difficulty and focus on tense atmosphere rather than balls-to-the-wall action, but it’s easily one of the best Alien games ever made. Alien Isolation takes place between the original film and its sequel. Ellen Ripley and her ship are missing, and her daughter Amanda desires closure in finding out where her mother went. Of course, conveniently, a Weyland-Yutani executive informs her that the Nostromo flight recorder has been discovered on board another space station called the Sevastopol. Joining a small crew, Amanda arrives at the Sevastopol to find the station run-down and majority of the crew dead. And to make matters worse, there’s a wide variety of dangers running amuck on the space station that Amanda must deal with in her search for closure.

After all, in the last few years I have cut up hundreds of the beasts with my pulse rifle, flamethrowers and other guns, torched the slimy eggs and destroyed countless facehuggers. And now, as Amanda Ripley, am I to be afraid of this one creature while exploring the decommissioned Sevastopol space station in search of the recovered flight recorder of the Nostromo? But it turned out differently. Completely different. Because the developers are creating something here that all the action-focused offshoots from Alien versus Predator to Colonial Marines to the Alien Trilogy do not, or only partially succeed: The respect and fear of this perfect killer organism!
