There’s only one thing to do… survive and kill countless zombies. Okay, two things to do. Oh and destroy the burger restaurants to try and stop the zombies. Three things then. Right of the bat, this game is rock solid hard. You will die and die and die and die and die… a lot. Thankfully, this is a rogue-lite game, so even though you will die (a lot), you’ll carry over some elements from previous attempts. As for how it plays and the basic gameplay? You’ll also need to keep a steady supply of apples too as these are your food that will keep you from dying of starvation. Players have to move their characters around a fairly small map hunting for loot while trying to fight off hordes of zombies, and once the area is cleared you hop back in your vehicle and go back to your home base to count the spoils of your supply run. Strategy is a key element in Deadly Days. The looting mechanic I will say is somewhat lacking in Deadly Days. To loot in the game you just target a building or care package, and one of the characters in your party will go inside to loot for a bit, while your other character fights off mobs of zombies. Combat in this game is pretty much all autonomous which can for sure turn off some players.

You and can only be pointed in a direction of where to go. Now the game feels more like some management simulation game especially with the involvement of Apples. Apples are a key component in this game and will be used for pretty much everything, from levelling up characters and weapons to also keeping your survivors fed so they can survive the night. So if you come back with no apples after a run, your gonna have a bad time. I feel like the game would’ve been more fun if this aspect was either removed or tweaked to the point it kept that RPG dungeon crawler aspect instead of a micromanagement simulation game. The buildings, vehicles, and even characters have a bit more dimension, while never losing the original style and intent of the animators. Though, once you start air-bombing and furiously attacking hordes of zombies, a lot of those details get clouded in fire and bodies. Deadly Days starts you off in a safe-zone camp with two characters who are equipped with weapons. In some cases, you might get a startup bonus action, but overall you start off with very little. Missions are how you earn loot to take back to your camp. Each mission varies between scavenging and rescuing, which are exactly as they sound.

Scavenge missions often have a stocked supermarket or tons of neighborhood shops to rummage through to get food and supplies. Rescue missions often have the same, but eventually you’ll find someone hiding inside of a shop. When you rescue them, they join your group permanently (well, unless they die along the way) a rogue-lite, it’s not quite the fast-paced death-and-restart cycle you’d expect. There are plenty of ways to avoid instant death, and because you’re building a home base in the middle of an apocalypse, your death feels more impactful. However, resources you’ve unlocked may carry over with the next “new game”.

There are challenges you can play, but I found the main game to be more enjoyable because it gave me a bit of a goal to see how much I could build up my base and how many days I could survive. The controls for the game were simple, and the legend was large on-screen, which I think makes it easy for anyone to pick up this title and know immediately what they can and can’t do. The music throughout the game was jazzy, almost like elevator music, which added a bit of humor and upbeat energy to each mission and idle screen.
