Decarnation is a 2D psychological horror adventure that puts you in the shoes of Gloria, a cabaret dancer in 1990s Paris whose life unravels after a mysterious patron takes an interest in her career. This Switch NSP release from Romslab bundles the base game and Update 1.0.1, giving you a complete package for emulator play on PC or mobile. If you enjoy story-driven horror with symbolic imagery, twisted puzzles, and a narrative that refuses to look away from uncomfortable themes, this one deserves your attention.

What Is Decarnation?

Decarnation is not a traditional survival horror game. It blends the structure of a 2D adventure with survival horror mechanics (cryptic puzzles, hostile environments, predators to avoid, and boss encounters) and layers on a set of symbolic minigames. These range from rhythm segments that represent stage performances to reflex challenges and metaphorical puzzles that mirror Gloria's mental state. The game draws heavy inspiration from Satoshi Kon's Perfect Blue and David Lynch's Mulholland Drive, and it wears those influences openly.

The story begins with Gloria posing nude for a sculptor. Later, she and her girlfriend Joy attend a prestigious exhibition where the finished statue is being groped by a shadowy man. That encounter triggers a steep decline in Gloria's mental health, and the game shifts into psychological horror territory. When her cabaret owner wants to move her off stage, Gloria accepts an offer from arts patron Hervé Saint-Louis, who promises to make her a star. Instead, she is kidnapped by his lackey, Bob, and the real nightmare begins.

Key Features

• Dual-realm gameplay: Switch between Gloria's waking life in Paris and the surreal landscapes of her subconscious, where her inner monsters take physical form.

Gameplay and Story Deep Dive

Decarnation opens with a glimpse of Gloria's seemingly joyful life as an adored dancer before slowly stripping away everything she holds dear. Once she is captured and stripped of her freedom, the game subjects you to a series of mental breakdowns and anxiety-ridden experiences that you play through rather than watch. The transition between days in the real world and time spent exploring Gloria's psyche is handled with care, using everyday events as springboards into nightmarish scenarios.

The game's enemies are grotesque monstrosities inspired by their human counterparts, mirroring how Gloria perceives them in real life. Her dream environments are bizarre but highly intricate, reflecting how she remembers them in her head. You'll find yourself swallowed by eyeballs in the floor and screaming clay monsters into oblivion before you know it. The combat, such as it is, ties directly into the narrative: uncovering key elements of Gloria's life aids her in defeating monsters in her dreams, and her real-life issues create new challenges in her dreams.

If you appreciate games that explore fame, patriarchal fixation, and the dark heart of humanity through a surreal lens, Decarnation delivers. It is the antithesis of optimistic narrative games like To The Moon; the pixel art walking sim framework might look similar, but the tone is far darker. It certainly won't suit everyone's tastes, and the game's input is limited to basic rhythm segments and dodging abominations, so players looking for deep mechanical complexity should adjust expectations. But for a story-driven horror experience, it stands out.
