Add in the fact that it was billed as a fusion between Hotline Miami and Rick & Morty, and I was completely sold on this pixelated time-traveler. And to engage in a bit of time-travel of my own, I’ll bring a piece of the conclusion to the front of this review and say that, while GOST of Time doesn’t deliver on all its promise, it’s still a competent little puzzler that kept me engaged through its relatively short runtime. Visually, GOST of Time definitely fits the bill of its inspirations, with the characters clearly aping Rick & Morty, while the “top-down twin-stick shooter run through an old VHS on an older CRT” vibe is all Hotline Miami.

It’s not a particularly flashy presentation, with relatively simple character animations, basic font choices, and unmemorable music, but it at least manages to stay clean and easy to parse throughout its runtime, which is a must for most puzzle games. It unequivocally captures the feel of something that would have been on Newgrounds back in the day, right down to the charmingly gratuitous way your character gouges out their eyes when you start a new time loop. Gost of Time from developer Sometimes You is a top-down puzzler with a simple premise. You’re conscripted by a pill-addicted scientist who has invented a time machine/cloning device in order to retrieve pills from deadly puzzle rooms. In practice, this means scripting the movements of a set of clones, feeding them to monsters or throwing them on spikes so the final version of you can get across obstacles to the next level. The game’s presentation can be kindly described as rough. Graphically, it makes Hotline Miami look like Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice. While the soundtrack is a total bop, the sound effects are a little less impressive.

Every time you go back in time, you’ll encounter your past self, repeating all your actions exactly.

Considering how many times you will have to set yourself on fire to progress, the long, piercing scream that accompanies that act gets very old very fast. Those hurdles aside, the game is wonderfully constructed set of puzzles. Rooms progress organically in difficulty, introducing new elements at a steady, but never overwhelming rate that encourages player innovation. While there could be a little more guidance (it took me a long time to realize that when you’re on fire the RIGHT thumbstick now controls your movement instead of the LEFT), figuring out the rooms becomes reliably rewarding. Destroying the first boss in particular was satisfying, feeding my clones to the beast to drop its shield so the rest could shoot it with lasers. The narrative may be almost vestigial and the experience only a couple of hours long, but there is something fascinating about playing Gost of Time. Expecting the player to intentionally treat their own bodies so expendably isn’t something you see very often outside of a Soulslike. Playing the game, I started to wonder why we cry at the deaths of some characters and not, say, the millions of Marios we’ve all sent to their doom with our failures.

Your job is to face challenges, bypass obstacles, and solve puzzles to retrieve the pills for the old man.

In Gost of Time, we are outright told that only the last, successful version of ourselves matters, which is either very hopeful or terribly bleak depending on how you look at things. Either way, there is something compelling in Gost of Time even if its wrapped up in 2000s Flash jank. The central mechanic of solving these puzzles revolves around playing as a series of clones in a minute long time loop. Every action a clone takes within that single minute is recorded, and will be reenacted once the next clone is born. Each clone has the option to take their own life, thus ending the minute early.

The loop also ends if the clone dies in any other way – this includes being attacked by enemies or triggering one of the many spike traps placed throughout the levels. The clone’s body will continue triggering any buttons it has died on, as well as make spike traps safe to cross, meaning there are many instances where a clone is forced to be sacrificed to progress further. In its most basic form, this may mean using one clone to trigger a spike trap that is blocking the way to the exit, and then using the next clone to walk over his corpse to collect the required pills and progress.
