Once you kick your square face into the air, you can rotate yourself around with the left analogue stick on your controller to try and gain momentum. You also use this to pitch yourself into an angle and then use another foot to kick you in that direction. It’s like an oddly over complicated javelin throwing contest as you’ll wall kick instead of wall jump to get across gaps. Of course, this rarely goes to plan and you’ll tumble back down again. File this game under the rage quit platform games with dodgy controls but Hoplegs does have logic behind it. Each level allows you to complete it or do it within a par time. The hardest way to complete a level is to do so without rotating and I must confess I don’t think I’ll ever be able to do that as I went full kick golf to get through most of story mode! Outside of story mode, Hoplegs big innovation to the genre is its level editor. It is very robust and quite intuitive. The world is mapped out in blueprint paper for you to place terrain, obstacles and background effects. What I loved about the editor most was just how deep you could go. Want to place background objects on 4 layers back? Go for it! Want to fine tune how often a gun turret files? It is all adjustable. It reminds me of LittleBigPlanet in that everything has sliders that you can change to suit what you want to build.

Being able to knock up a level in a few minutes, fine tune for another few and then clear it and upload it was a delightfully engaging experience. You can choose how deep you want to go and still make something worth sharing. Levels on Steam workshop are then downloadable and able to be played. It does currently lack a ranking system but you can filter levels by tags. Whilst the game is in Early Access, I didn’t come across many bugs at all, and all the ones I did were in the level editor and sure to be ironed out. Co-Op and Party modes are coming in the future and those will open up Hoplegs to a wider audience than hardcore platformer lovers. As it stands though, this is already an enjoyable game. Hoplegs may only have a niche appeal to hardcore platform gamers at the moment, but it has the potential to have the same energy and vibes as Ultimate Chicken Horse. Party mode could bring utter chaos and so it won’t matter if you are all terrible at the game, it’ll be a great laugh for all involved. Each of the face buttons is a limb. The limb is the same regardless of direction you’re in, so this may be awkward, but the game always lets you know which is where. You can spin your body left and right if needed. This can work in and against your favor. It can get pretty silly and just make things much more chaotic. Each stage has a little set of challenges. Can you beat the stage without spinning?

It’s harder than you think. Can you make par for each stage? This too is also harder than you think. Don’t even think about attempting both at the same time. I’m nowhere near that coordinated. There’s actually unlockables for Hoplegs! You can customize Hoppus to your liking if you unlock new legs, faces, skins, etc…Sometimes you’ll get them by just…getting good, sometimes it requires you to find certain objects in stages. The game isn’t incredibly long with it’s story, so this stuff is always nice. If that isn’t enough for replayability or extra however, there is a long all in one stage. Still, it emphasized the art style and made it easier to follow the character as the art helps differentiate types of land. Blue and shiny usually meant ice, grey brick with yellow flooring meant castle, and black floating circles meant you’re traversing floating gas. Since the color blue doesn’t often pop up, this specific color palate helped me find where I was located in the world. It also helps the cutscenes show what happens and makes everything feel cohesive. The colors tell the difference between grass and buildings, or parts of a building from each other. The cutscene’s art direction helped me envision the story the developer was trying to build, rather than leaving it to my imagination to make something that vaguely made sense.

The colors used show what’s important and differentiate the foreground from the background. Everything that is in the background is usually lighter than the rest of the game. Meanwhile, colors in the foreground are darker than everything else. As a wild and goofy story told to kids, the art style felt like a perfect fit. The controls are simply mapped but incredibly hard to master. You’ll need to have extremely good timing when tumbling along the course to use the correct leg to keep that momentum. Also, to make sure you are kicking out in the right direction. I can’t tell you the number of times I got ahead of myself and ended up launching myself backwards instead of forwards.

A huge learning curve to master, but that was really my own fault. I imagine those with much better hand-eye coordination would excel in this after a few levels of practice. Each course in the story mode has a ‘par time’, which is the desired time you should aim to finish the course. There is no real penalty or award for taking longer than this time; you will simply receive a course pass and progress to the next. In story mode, there are 27 courses, each with varying difficulty and challenges, slowly introducing tips and tricks for you. Things such as using walls in midair to your advantage or identifying buttons that can aid progression are key to help reduce the time taken to complete the levels.
