While technically a sequel to the first title, I failed to find many ties between the two, aside from the King that was in the first game and you playing another alchemist. The King’s alchemists crafted a Chasm Mirror, used to banish the evil witch Drosera into another dimension. The King’s health is starting to fail though, so he begins to prepare his son, Prince Fern, to take over the throne. On the day of his coronation he goes missing, and it’s up to you to find him and solve what has happened. Like other titles in the genre, the story really isn’t the main showcase here, as it is filled with fantasy tropes and beautiful backgrounds for you to explore.

Luckily you don’t need to have played the first game to make sense of this one, as the hook to these games is all about the gameplay and its puzzles. An evil witch, Drosera, waged war against the King and his people. To defeat her, his alchemists created the Chasm Mirror, a portal to another dimension, and imprisoned her within it. The four years of war took its toll on the King, who fell ill on the journey back to the capital. Unable to cure him, the King’s alchemist is tasked with raising his son, Prince Fern, and preparing him for his coronation. The game is a sequel to Lost Grimoires but there is very little in common between the two titles. The alchemist returns and it’s the same King that we rescued before, but there are no storylines to tie the two games together. You can easily play the second game in the trilogy and fully understand what’s going on without having played the first game. There’s even an attempt at a different story theme; while the usual Artifex Mundi themes of dark magic and fantasy are still present, those themes take a back seat to the tale of love that Lost Grimoires 2 tries to depict instead. Unfortunately, the only character you feel like you know in any regard is the protagonist alchemist.

Both Prince Fern and his lover feel like props, characters who are there to help in solving a couple of puzzles, and it makes the story fall flat. I feel like I can’t talk about these additions too much as even explaining the goal behind them may give away how to complete them. Veterans of the series will be able to spot these fresh encounters easily as they work their way through the normal hidden object scenes and puzzles. The typical number of these scenes and puzzles are present and can be expected throughout the game. Honestly, there isn’t much more to say about these that I haven’t said before and I can sum up my feelings quite succinctly by saying if these challenges weren’t fun or engaging at all, I would not play them. I will not try to tell you that Artifex Mundi titles offer up anything unheard of in gaming, but I can say that they do scratch an itch that I find myself with after playing countless hours of shooters and RPGs. It seems that it doesn’t matter that Lost Grimoires 2 is a sequel as, while the still frame art has improved, the animations have taken a noticeable backpedal from recent releases. To be fair, this hasn’t mattered to me in the past and doesn’t change much now. I play these games for their puzzles and not for how pretty they are (although that would be nice). The scenery does seem to have even more going on than previous titles, but I cannot really be sure. Voice acting is always hit or miss in these games and this time is no different.

All of this is punctuated by the forgettable and extremely safe story that does nothing but drive the player towards more puzzles. I believe I’ve mentioned that I dislike how careful these games are with their narratives as it makes them predictable and forgettable (have I said this before?). A few years before the story of Lost Grimoires 2 begins, an evil witch named Drosera turned on her own people and kicked off a brutal war, which eventually saw her captured inside of a magical Chasm Mirror forevermore. Or so they thought. When the King at the time falls ill, she vows to return and through some wicked plot, manages to set the wheels in motion after tricking the young Prince, Fern.

Your role is as the personal medic to Prince Fern and so when he gets kidnapped as part of the devious plan on the eve of his coronation, you must do everything in your power to get him back. It’s not the most original concept – the antagonist seems trapped for all eternity – as similar stories have been told in games of the same ilk. There’s just about enough storytelling fed along the way to keep the player interested though. Less so can be said for the voice acting, which is generally a problem area for these types of games, because the sincerity and believability of the characters in times of danger or sadness is lacking.
