We learn how to control the squad of mice, which is a bit different than only moving one mouse around. If you are playing with a controller, moving around is done with the left thumbstick, and to attack, use X. There are a variety of formations that the mice can battle in, which will also change the type of weapon that they use. The different patterns are set by using the D-pad. Up is the offensive stance, where the mice move into a triangle shape, with Micel taking the point and leading the group. They attack using bows and arrows, which is great for ranged attacks against the enemy, but the group moves quite slowly.

It is also tricky to spin the whole group around to attack foes that have popped up behind you. It is good for what it is and it doesn’t outstay it welcome. However, I never found myself excited or feeling like this would be something I would come back to. This is a game in six months I’ll forget I have reviewed it (and there are quite a few of those with over 500 reviews under my belt). Still, I cannot be hard on it as it still a competent game. Then there’s the archery formation, which is exactly what it sounds like. The formation is a triangle and the trio at the back fire arrows straight ahead every second. I wasn’t too big of a fan because aiming was hard sometimes. The last formation was a defensive one where everyone crowds in a circle and moves as one unit. When you attack, they all attack at once. This is useful for keeping other characters safe within the circle or attacking multiple enemies at once. Changing between the three formations on the fly was quick and fun, and I loved how fluently the other mice did everything.

So what’s MiceGard about? Well I don’t want to spoil too much because it’s a very short game that can be completed in a few hours so I don’t want to give away too much info other than you and your pack of mice must protect your village from dastardly frogs and other entities. The one feature that this game really needs to expand on, is the village rebuilding feature. Basically, in every quest you do you collect a certain amount of rocks, and back at the village you can use those rocks like currency and rebuild the village with five or six different buildings that will give you passive bonuses when built. The problem here is, I’ve rebuilt the whole village before I was even halfway through the game, so I was just collecting currency for nothing after that point. One way you could solve this problem is either to increase the pricing of certain buildings so it takes more time to build, or add more uses for the currency, like maybe upgrading weapons, armor or upgrading your mice companions. The story is, really forgettable and kind of confusing at parts. I don’t want to spoil anything but at some points I was just confused at what is happening and who is even talking to me.

Protect your village and kin – but watch out for dark conspiracies!

Oh, and this game is Nordic mythology based. So the premise is, your god Freya has stopped protecting your village and you’re trying to find out why and get on her good side again – or not, because you have a choice to either please the gods or just go your own way. It’s a minor choice in the grand scheme but it’s a nice addition. Odin and Loki also make an appearance in the game, but again, I don’t want to spoil anything. I managed to fix every house by the sixth level in the game. The buildings also give upgrades, and honestly, with how difficult this game is it could benefit from more upgrades.

Micegard is a fairly difficult game. The games length clocking in at about 1 – 2 hours is stretched out by forcing players to replay multiple levels. The game does get a bit frustrating at parts, especially when you die at the end of a level and have to completely redo it. This style of gameplay can get old fairly quickly, especially when playing by yourself as opposed to the multiplayer that comes with Four Swords Adventure. During my playthrough of Micegard, towards the end it became pretty boring, but luckily the game is short and sweet; it doesn’t overstay its welcome. Bloody Rally Show Switch NSP
