Baelin is an NPC in Azerim, an MMORPG with a fantasy focus. When the heroes all suddenly disappear, a mysterious energy causes Baelin to become a hero…somewhat. He is very much still an NPC, and can only say his NPC phrases, but now can become tasked with different hero activities, like helping out others and rescuing the world from a great evil that’s been accidentally unleashed upon the world. Nice Day for Fishing leans into its comedic tone, often poking fun at traditional RPG tropes. It’s light-hearted, clever, and self-aware, though it does occasionally include mild swearing, which might put off parents looking to play it with younger children. When you first start the game, the mechanics are quite simplistic. Baelin is equipped with a fishing rod and the helpful town members that haven’t gone missing since the attack are more than willing to help him. Most quests require you to go fishing, to no one’s surprise and that’s where things get a bit more interesting.

In order to fish, you’ll have to equip a specific type of bait. Normally, when hovering over a fish it will let you know what type of bait it requires. At the start you won’t have access to every type of bait but the more you progress, the more you’ll unlock, including a magnet you can attach to the end of your fishing rod to pick up treasure in the water. Once you cast your line and catch a fish, you’ll then be in a type of “battle” scenario. Each fish has a specific attack pattern you’ll have to learn in order to avoid losing the fish. It’s not as complicated as parrying in something like a From Software game, but it can still be challenging against powerful fish that attack multiple times in quick succession. As you progress you’ll also unlock other items to help you with fishing like special potions or magic attacks. But things can get EVEN more complicated than that. Later in the story you’ll meet someone who is able to manipulate the currents in the water that will help you with reaching caves and areas that were previously unreachable. You just have to hover your line over one of the currents and it will follow the direction that it flows.

Navigate the pull of the underwater currents to move your hook into hard to reach caves and upgrade your fishing line to explore deeper into the abyss.

You’ll only find in these hidden areas. Even more exciting location will open up as you progress until eventually it will feel like a completely different game from the cozy fishing adventure you started playing at the beginning. Baelin has a stamina gauge and a health gauge, and when the fish attacks you you’ll have to block or parry their attack to reduce the damage to your HP gauge. The edges of the screen switch from blue to red and back to let you know when it’s safe to attack. You can sacrifice some stamina to use spells that will decrease the fish’s HP and/or cause a status effect such as bleeding.

You get to use healing spells and items, but fish don’t get to use spells until their rage meter fills up from your attacks. If you aren’t careful and continue attacking in a fish’s attack phase, you’ll lose more and more HP. When your HP meter is depleted, you lose the fish and have to try and catch them again. I do like how we start with full stamina and HP gauges for each fish battle instead of having to worry about healing before fishing again. You earn experience for each fish you catch, and leveling up increases Baelin’s stats.
