It’s hard to gauge the distance of attacks and to even manage to hit the hideous beast stood right in front of you; all this serves to undermine the precision that’s required to successfully parry and counterattack. Too many times, especially late game when the big guys really show up – I found my view of Jubei completely obscured, or several enemies that were off screen winding up attacks wiped me out before I could even try to react the sole survivor of his clan, after an invasion by demons called the Genma, led by Nobunaga, led to their erasure. Jubei then learns about the Oni roots of his familial ties, quickly leading to a quest to gather five special orbs to protect humanity from Nobunaga’s reign and avenge his people has a rapidly paced narrative, but this mostly standalone sequel takes a handful of hours more to complete than the debut entry.

Also like the first title, Onimusha 2’s plot is undeniably its weakest element, though for different reasons. While the first Onimusha didn’t have much of a narrative to begin with and suffered from pretty clumsy cutscene writing, Onimusha 2 sort of unsuccessfully tries to build an ensemble of ally characters who work with Jubei are introduced swiftly and even treated as party members who assist Jubei in combat encounters. In all honesty, in the little screentime these characters have, they manage to be impressively distinct in their personalities and dynamics. You can get a rough sense of how they all interact with each other and where they stand with Jubei. However, save for Oyu, who is by far the most captivating of this cast for spoiler-related reasons, there’s just nowhere near enough focus on these characters to feel genuine bonds with any of them. Making this matter mildly worse is the gift-giving system, which comprises discoverable and purchasable items that can be given to these allied characters at practically any time.

Not only is there a general issue of quantity over quality here, but the reactions to these gifts are often forgettable single lines of dialogue that don’t actually lead to you learning more about these characters. Still, the gifts do serve the practical purpose of receiving consumable items and gauge capacity upgrades for Jubei, expanding his magic and health. Some story events and interactions seem to change depending on who has higher character affinity, too, yet I’m unsure as to the extent.

Moving onto actual gameplay, if you’ve played an older Resident Evil or a Dino Crisis game, you’ll know how they feel, a little stiff to control, and it can be a bit frustrating at times. Onimusha 2 isn’t exactly a difficult game, but when you swing your sword and the game decides to ignore the enemy entirely, it can be a little frustrating. The camera also doesn’t help the situation; it’s a fixed camera angle, so you would think that the developers could place it in the optimal position so the player has a clear view of the action.
