I got to experience that for myself after playing the first two hours of Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven, a remake of one of the most popular games in the series. The game opens telling the story of prince Gerard, one of the heirs to the Varennes throne who is more of a bookworm than a fighter. In an effort to ensure Gerard is able to fight for his kingdom if needed, his father the king decides to take him on a few demon expelling missions that’ll help keep their subjects safe. With the help of a variety of mighty warrior friends it won’t take you long to start getting stronger.

The fantasy story Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven tells will feel pretty familiar for fans of the genre, but it’s engaging all the same. The turn-based combat is what is shown most in the demo, with players facing varied enemies. Each character has skills depending on the weapons and elemental spells that they have equipped. There are powerful strikes called overdrive abilities, with their gauge filling as players exploit enemies’ weaknesses. This gauge is shared by the whole party and each character has a different overdrive skill, making who unleashes their skill an interesting strategic choice. It is rewarding to learn to choose skills wisely to fill the overdrive gauge and then unleash a skill to deal massive damage. The skills used during each battle also have a consequence on character growth since the elemental spells and weapons used in battle gain technique points at the end of each combat.

All towns and dungeons are now also fully rendered with reworked terrains and layouts.

As there are several weapon types, players can choose how they want their party to develop, be it focusing on a specific weapon or varying how they take down enemies to have balanced growth. Health Points (HP) and Battle Points (BP) also level up after gaining enough experience. Health is replenished at the end of each battle. Battle Points are only replenished with special items, making it crucial to learn when to use abilities that consume BP. The glimmer system is used to learn new abilities for each character. An icon next to the ability indicates that a new one may be learned from using it. Formations also play an important role in combat, with fighters on the vanguard being most likely to be targeted by foes. Several pieces of equipment can increase defense at the cost of speed or other attributes, encouraging players to have some of these tanks on the front line. However, the formation can be broken if players are surprised by enemies. That’s important because where different characters will have wildly different skill sets, and you’ll supposedly eventually be customizing characters to meet your needs.

I only got a glimpse of this during the demo, but I’d love to experiment with different classes and formats more than I could here. In combat, the various characters in my party did have quite different abilities, and the goal was mostly to figure out which enemies were weak to certain abilities. Interestingly, while your BP, which powers special attacks, is only restored at set healing points, your party is fully healed after each battle. It sounds like this would make things easy, but I actually really like the result as it means the developers don’t have to worry about pacing each encounter to not overwhelm players.

When you have to get through ten fights without dying, each one can normally only do a small amount of damage. It forces games to make most of these fights inconsequential. That’s not the case here, as even on the game’s normal difficulty, there’s some real challenge from early on. For players who want less of that, though, there is a casual mode, and for those who really want to be pushed, there’s a hard mode as well. At the end of combat, your characters will improve, but leveling up here isn’t quite as simple as most RPGs. Aragami 2 Switch NSP
