I was relieved to learn that it wasn’t just me not paying attention – the character had around two minutes of screen time after being introduced, and then was only around for the very end. I feel obligated to discuss the voice acting in Shadow Warrior 3, because there is a lot of it. I think this is the first game I’ve played that felt over-acted; there was almost never a point where nobody was talking. Wang’s voice work was well performed, while shooting off jokes at every opportunity. Though a lot of the jokes seemed dated, they did get a few chuckles out of me. But honestly, I generally found myself rolling my eyes more often than not. Other characters are really phoned in; evidently, they did not have much of a script to work with, so their dialogue is essentially meaningless and lacks any sense of passion or care.

Wang is a constant source of kinetic energy, and I suspect that this comes off much better in a game that lasts 5-6 hours than it would if the game were twice as long. The voice acting is also well done. Every character sounds exactly how I would think they would. The lines were performed well; every quip with a perfect deadpan or sarcastic tone to match the joke left me with at least a good chuckle. While the game is short, it is a blast. You collect power-ups to gain finishers, reminding me of the newer Doom games. And from the finishers, most enemies will surrender a powerful weapon to help simplify the slaughter of the mob. That brings me to my last point. The game is incredibly linear. It’s a cutscene, a fight, parkour, rinse and repeat. Maybe you’ll stumble onto the occasional puzzle; however, these are incredibly rare. A lot of the mob-type battles become increasingly frustrating if you don’t find the upgrade orbs or complete the challenges to gain upgrades. From the get-go, Shadow Warrior 3 makes clear that it wants to be exciting more than anything else. Its very first fights take place on the back of that Earth-threatening dragon, which you run and jump across like an action movie hero. It generally doesn’t slow down from there either, and that breakneck pace is probably for the best.

The movement was always fluid with a very generous dodge. As well as a grappling that is used to pull yourself to enemies. It is a great time overall, and a short one at that. I finished the story with most of the challenges on offer within 6 hours overall on normal. But that short run time does invite me to play it again to get my “Warrior Rank” up by completing post-game challenges. Throughout my first playthrough, there are tons of challenges to complete that reward me with upgrade points to spend on Lo Wang and his enemies. Further unlocking meaningful upgrades for the weapons. They are never too challenging and as mentioned before I almost finished every normal challenge before the credits rolled. The warrior rank challenges however will require multiple playthroughs in the new game plus. There are 3 of them that host 15 rounds of fighting enemy hordes.

We are fighting on the back of the huge ass dragon that was unleashed at the end of Shadow Warrior 2 as Lo Wang tries to get to the head to deliver a killing blow. However, the Dragon has some tricks up its sleeve and sends Lo Wang flying through the night sky. He obviously survives but his ego, or rather his mojo as he puts it, has been dealt a heavy blow. While he’s regaling his misfortunes, Orochi Zilla makes an appearance. Previously Lo Wang’s nemesis, he suggests they work together to harness the chi energy from Hoji’s mask.

While defending Zilla from attack, Lo Wang pushes him out of the way. In doing so, Hoji’s mask activates and sucks Zilla into its void. Wang then needs to track Zilla down before demons can burst through the sanctuary gates. The story campaign was a hell of a lot of fun and one of the better FPS games from 2022 for me.
