The game has realistic physics, but due to its accurate depiction of the source material it’s not as forgiving or fun as its competitors. The 11 downloadable tables, available for purchase in two separate packages or individually, likely won’t be as enticing to younger audiences. Forget The Walking Dead, Valve’s Portal and a series of colourful themes covering a range of genres, because here you’ll be playing the original Ghostbusters table and rocking out to AC/DC on another. A table based on the latest Star Trek movies is one of the newer ones, though all it really highlights is the weaker collection of licenses.

Odds are at least somewhat decent that maybe, if you’re a fan, you’ve already picked the reruns up in the other collection. Each table in the game is its own unique beast, with an individual rule-set and layout completely different from any other, barring the basics. You’ve got the plunger on the left, flippers in the bottom-center, a couple of triangular bumpers above the flippers and lanes on either side of them guiding the ball down, and the rest could be pretty much anything. One of the fantastic things about pinball is seeing how each new table takes all that free space and defines it by use of shots, ramps, targets, and colorful table toys that bring the theme to life. What makes a table mechanically good is how the shots fit together, giving the player a decent chance at activating the different play modes by using either a little skill or a lot of perseverance.

Batting the ball around by mindlessly tapping both flippers at the same time, every time, can earn a nice light-show, but a skilled player should be able to string one shot to the another to send the score through the roof. A good pinball will provide a nice challenge while subtly working with the player to provide the needed chance at making a necessary shot, but a great pinball will enhance that with an amazing theme, lights everywhere, and a dynamic layout. The approach Farsight have taken is an interesting one, as the whole package is barebones; don’t expect any global leaderboards or online functionality here. However, this is in line with the whole approach that Stern wanted with this video game. That being it is all about recreating as authentically as possible the real tables that they have created over the years. As a result, all the attention has gone in to painstakingly digitally recreating the tables. Conversely, the rest of the presentation is an afterthought. The few menus that do exist look like they could have come from an old flash game, and aside from global control settings everything is self-contained within each table.

Given that there are no ancillary elements to the game you would expect the game to perform well, for the most part, this is the case. When docked there was no noticeable slowdown, it really did start to feel like controlling a real pinball table and that the TV screen was just a window in between. Unfortunately, the same can’t quite be said when playing handheld. This wasn’t game breaking by any means, as the visible slow down was very minor, but for a game that stresses realism and authenticity to this extent, it is a shame.

Stern Pinball Arcade is very much like a time machine, transporting the player back to a period when life was much simpler. Depending on your age, you’re likely going to embrace this, or you’re not. This simplicity is reflected throughout the game. Unlike other pinball games, there’s no online connectivity or multiplayer or cross-network play, but a global leaderboard has now been added alongside a Portrait mode (for handheld use). There’s not even a local multiplayer option. At the time of review, FarSight Studios is also still yet to incorporate a vertical camera angle for the handheld mode – whereas Zen Studio’s latest release shipped with this feature.
