The SRW console games have been running on the ancient engine utilized by the SRW Alpha games ever since the year 2000; yes, even SRW 30 was using that as well. Factor that whole engine switch, along with the ongoing challenges of developing games in the modern era these days… it’s not surprising that the SRW series has struggled to maintain its cadence of yearly releases. When SRW Y fully unveiled its participating series list, I’ll admit that my initial impression of SRW Y was a bit deflated. For lack of a more elegant term, it seemed “safe” and “unsurprising” with the vast majority of the series making a return from SRW V, X, T, and 30.

Super Robot Wars is a grid-based tactical combat RPG that brings together units and pilots from various anime series to fight their common enemies.

Several parts truncated versions of included source materials comically smashed into a shared world. Imagine the story of Evangelion taking place at the same time as Crossbone Gundam and something you’ve never heard of involving giant robots that are also magical dragons or something. All the while, a small, ragtag military force that also has access to the actual strongest giant robot is able to bring all these people together for a common cause that’s somehow the most important. It’s the same audience that stockpiles model kits; they just love to show up for things! What makes these games special isn’t just the characters coming together or the SRPG gameplay, which mostly involves lots of toggling through menus and carefully avoiding being surrounded. The fanfare during combat goes hard to an absurd level, instantly transforming sterile menus and small sprites into massive, obsessively animated tributes to each character and each series, complemented either by instrumental musical nods or the actual songs from each anime if you shell out the extra cash. It’s mostly music, for what it’s worth. Kind of like what some recent Dragon Ball games do, but on a much larger scale. It’s pretty cool to have the actual music kick in during each round of combat (disclaimer: we received the DLC along with our review code of the base game), but not necessary to understand what’s happening and to have a good time. Overall, I think Super Robot Wars Y is better paced than Super Robot Wars 30 despite being a very long game. And it’s all because each battle is basically a high octane fancam montage. It’s corny sometimes, but it also rules. I’m speaking broadly because many of these games are similar to each other, although obviously the animations and whatnot are very different the further back you go. You show up each time not for the individual stories, which are mostly shallow and kind of silly (with some exceptions), but to see what each new roster is like and how those characters interact with each other.

And of course to see those animations in battle. That said, there’s a good chance SRW Y is going to be your first time. For decades, SRW had no chance of leaving Japan, presumably due to all the different licenses involved making things a legal nightmare. But for whatever reason (it’s still unclear but probably driven by shifting global audiences), we’ve progressed from SRW games being localized in English (but still only sold in Asia), to the previous entry being sold exclusively on Steam, to this new one finally coming to North American consoles. It’s a huge deal, even if the massive DLC price tags are concerning.
