I really think the card gimmick for this game was to save on art budget; It’s a standard JRPG in gameplay and aside from all characters, monsters and items being cards, it’s just menu based combat with a light “mana” system. It’s like Octopath Traveller with OG FFVII’s materia system of skills. Loosely. I really hope this review helps people as I would be sorely disappointed if I bought this looking for a deck builder. I’ve become a huge fan of this series as a kind of under-appreciated hidden gem. First thing to say, it looks like a card game/TTRPG but could be redone as a pixel RPG with almost identical game mechanics. Think of the cards medium as more there to facilitate the style of storytelling– this is basically Yoko Taro and Alim creating their own RPG Maker engine.
If you’re into the Drakenierlore iceberg kind of stuff, the series is a must play.
(Spoiler from first couple hours) Not positive yet, but I’m pretty sure there are two paths that branch *very* early on. There are darker-color cards during dialogue that seem to be path-specific. The difficulty seems like its in between Isle Dragon and Forsaken Maiden, not as tough as Maiden but definitely more substantial than Isle Dragon. The card-game-in-a-game had its mechanics improved! There are better set collection effects now that can really swing a match. Not too far through yet, will update when I finish the story. Love this version of Voice of Cards and it’s an easy recommendation to those interested in this series.

Each version of VoC has a gimmick that sets it apart from each other and this game has a monster catching mechanic to it. It honestly adds a fun and new layer to building a team that the other versions did not have. The narration and world building through story telling continues to prove effective and enjoyable at a casual level with characters to love and hate. My biggest gripe so far would be the RNG aspect of monster catching. This is an opinion coming from a VoC completionist: Each monster card has a rarity from 1-5 (some exceptions) and you have to encounter them in the world, kind of like pokemon. - First you will need YUZU Emulator. Download it. Open it in WinRar, 7ZIP idk and then move the contents in a folder and open the yuzu.exe.
- There click Emulation -> Configure -> System -> Profile Then press on Add and make a new profile, then close yuzu
- Inside of yuzu click File -> Open yuzu folder. This will open the yuzu configuration folder inside of explorer.
- Create a folder called "keys" and copy the key you got from here and paste it in the folder.
- For settings open yuzu up Emulation -> Configure -> Graphics, Select OpenGL and set it to Vulkan or OpenGL. (Vulkan seems to be a bit bad atm) Then go to Controls and press Single Player and set it to custom
- Then Press Configure and set Player 1 to Pro Controller if you have a controller/keyboard and to Joycons if Joycons. Press Configure and press the exact buttons on your controller After you're done press Okay and continue to the next step.
- Download any ROM you want from Romslab. After you got your File (can be .xci or .nsp) create a folder somewhere on your PC and in that folder create another folder for your game.
- After that double-click into yuzu and select the folder you put your game folder in.
- Lastly double click on the game and enjoy it.
NOTE: Some games may not run in Yuzu emulator, therefore you may use Ryujinx.
