These battles are long and can be stressful at times, but there’s something undeniably addictive about these kinds of games, and the same holds true for Freedom Wars Remastered. Freedom Wars Remastered is, at its core, a loose take on Monster Hunter’s gameplay. As a Sinner within an underground Panopticon city, you must complete combat ops. Y’see, in a world in which resources are exceptionally scarce, the very nature of existence is in itself a crime; hence, you begin the game with a rather harsh one million-year sentence.

From large creatures known as Abductors, you can reduce your sentence and gain entitlements along the way. It’s a fascinating premise that quickly sunk its hooks into us thanks to its dystopian nature and heavy focus on reducing or lengthening your sentence. Entitlements — such as spending time with fellow inmates, exercising, or even lying down to rest — are initially forbidden and can add hundreds, if not thousands, of additional years to your sentence. Despite its intriguing setup, however, Freedom Wars’ story can often get in the way of the gameplay. Nothing has changed in this regard from the Vita version, and for the opening handful of hours at least, it can feel exceptionally slow as the world and its characters start to open up. This eases up a bit as you progress, but having to sit through lengthy dialogue sessions every time you complete an operation can be a tad grating. That’s not to say that Freedom Wars isn’t enjoyable. The far-flung future setting is one of Freedom Wars greatest strengths.

I love the overarching ideas and themes that push you to improve your character’s loadout, and their position within the Panopticon. The gameplay remains as solid as it was at release, and if you’re looking for a timesink while you wait for Monster Hunter Wilds, there are flashes of greatness through the game’s runtime that make it worth picking up. It is a case of missed opportunity, though. The PC port has launched in an awful state, and while the first patches have improved things considerably, I wouldn’t expect to be experiencing any level of frame skipping in a basic remaster of a ten-year-old game. Options are extremely limited, and you can’t make any changes to the frame rate whatsoever – surely this is a game that could run at 120Hz without breaking a sweat a dystopian post-apocalyptic future where all of humanity exists inside enormous underground prison facilities called Pantopicons. Back when the Vita was doing its thing, there was practically an arms race happening between different studios trying to be The Next Monster Hunter. This was well before Monster Hunter World became a global sensation, and the Vita wasn’t exactly a thriving platform. So this effort mostly fizzled, although Bandai Namco’s God Eater has stuck around.

Anyway, Freedom Wars is one of those, developed at Dimps and published by Sony. Between being published by Sony, Japan Studio (RIP) contributing to development, and the loud and edgy prison theme, it makes sense that Freedom Wars did stand out for some at the time. Bandai Namco published it, another interesting factor, so I have a lot of questions about the possible future here. But we’re here now, and significantly more eyeballs can be on this game now that it’s on platforms that are, in fact, thriving. So there are way more folks checking this out for the first time.
