Ghostrunner’s story is rather straightforward, which can be a positive or a negative depending on how you look at it. You play as the titular Ghostrunner, a cybernetic ninja who has conveniently misplaced his memory, trapped at the base of an industrial tower which supposedly acts as the living quarters for the last surviving members of the human race. At the apex of this Tower of Babel is the enigmatic Mara, an evil ruler who needs to be deposed because she’s an evil ruler, and you’re guided on your murderous journey to the top by voices in your head who swear they’re on your side.

Gameplay

Ghostrunner stand out for being a title that combines platforms, combats and puzzles to bring us a frantic and demanding experience . Our character will be able to perform various actions: run, jump, slide, push off and use a cybernetic hook. For its parkour movements, it is reminiscent of titles like Mirror’s Edge (which is arguably a spiritual predecessor), betting on a fast and acrobatic style of action in which the slightest mistake is paid with life. It’s an awkward area with physics that feel off and frustrating mantling issues that send you flying towards your death when all you meant to do was pull yourself up to a ledge. Ghostrunner also uses an interesting, albeit slightly gimmicky, upgrade system that allows you to alter and enhance your abilities. You earn upgrades automatically as you progress, which take the form of tetris-like blocks that can be rotated and placed onto a grid. Space is limited, and the better upgrades take much more of the grid, so you’ll have to pick and choose which upgrades you want to have active at any time. Although the game looks good on Switch both in TV mode and in portable mode, the truth is that the graphic cut compared to other versions is noticeable. Some textures can be improved, it looks brighter and elements such as puddles and certain surfaces do not look as good as they should.
